Agreed! When six of your nine album tracks make it to your first Greatest Hits album, you've either had a very short career or you've made a hell of an album.

Well this album is very different from all her other stuff imo. Her other albums are very stripped down folk music or old acoustic country. This is more processed, not acoustic, and has several covers but it is still not "noisy." even with the electric instruments it is still just instrumentation backing up her incredible voice.

I really like this album.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough, especially for those timid about country music. It was my first Emmylou and still my favorite by a mile. Some trivia about this record:

Produced by Daniel Lanois (Bob Dylan, U2, Peter Gabriel)
Songs written by Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and other less famous but as notable.
Guest performers include Larry Mullen Jr (U2's drummer), Neil Young, Steve Earle, Dave Olney and others.

I was able to find online rough mixes of (most) of these songs and I was surprised to hear that while Lanois has embellished the songs quite a bit, in their raw states they are consistent. Anyone who has Dylan's "Tell-Tale Signs" and knows the 'de-Lanoised' mix of "Most of the Time" and the final version can guess how the original takes sound.

I remember when this disc came out in 1995 reading that most of the songs were single takes (not necessarily the first takes, but not spliced together) with the key performers playing in the same room together. Despite some of the heavy studio glop you can still hear it, in my opinion.

Some standout cuts to sample: Goodbye, Every Grain of Sand, Sweet Old World, Will I Be Loved (Hendrix cover re-titled), and Blackhawk.
