The Official Rank Em As You Hear Them 2009 Edition

With little more than a week left in the year & 2009 albums already starting to be available to listen to it's that time for the hardcore music lovers like myself to use this thread to keep track & rankings of your favorite new music of 2009.

You can view last year's thread here.

2008 Rank'em as You Hear Them Thread

The rules are simple:

This thread is for ranking albums that are released in 2009 in the United States. This does not include reissues or albums that you have purchased/heard for the first time this year but were released in prior years. This does not include albums released at the end of 2008 or that you just discovered in 2009.

Keep your list in one post (edit!) and keep them in some sort of order

Note: Please don't use a "placeholder" post if you don't actually plan on updating your list.
You know who you are!

I'm usually pretty active in this thread & I buy a ton of music, so I would like to go back to compiling a list at the end of the year & I will count everyone's rankings to make a DVD Talk Best Music of 2009 final list.

Check out each other's list, see if your tastes are similar & try something new, & hopefully we can all check out some great new music in 2009!

Thanks!

I'll add in some Music Talk quicklinks once some other 2009 threads get started.

reserved. I haven't taken part in this in previous years, but I'm going to make a solid effort for 2009.

Thrice - Beggars

Isis - Wavering Radiant

The Soundtrack of our Lives - Communion
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Silverstein - A Shipwreck in the Sand
Killswitch Engage - Killswitch Engage (2009)

Joel Plaskett - Three
Dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
Mastodon - Crack the Skye

I'm going to do something out of the ordinary for myself this year. I'm going to listen to as much 2009 music as possible, even if that means avoiding anything older for the next 365 days (starting Jan 1st). I may go as far as removing pre-2009 music from my ipod. I'm even going to listen to new albums by bands that I've previously written-off as 'crap'.

Should be fun!

edit to add: Looks like I barely listened to any new music this year! I blame it on buying a house and getting married!

Superlative, career-making work.
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

Hard to top and missing just a small something that would otherwise make it 5 stars.
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Metric - Fantasies

Excellent album but still room for improvement.
Antony & the Johnsons - The Crying Light

I enjoy it, but there's something missing.

The Decemberists - Hazards of Love
doves - Kingdom of Rust
eels - Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire

Middle of the road, I don't actively dislike it but I probably won't listen to it much either. For older artists, it means it's completely forgettable by comparison.
Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream
Bishop Allen - Grrr...
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Beware!
Eminem - Relapse
Iron & Wine - Around the Well
The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

Hmm. I can't get into it at all. Heading into active dislike.

PJ Harvey & John Parish - A Girl a Boy Walked by
The Boy Least Likely to - The Laws of the Playground
Royksopp - Junior

No Sir, I don't like it.
U2 - No Line on the Horizon

I actively dislike it and would rather jab my ears out with cotton swabs.

Shoot me before playing this, please.

*due to it being a comedy album, it will remain unranked in the year's 10 best

I go back to the comparison I made earlier to slavery. Slavery existed because it was commercially viable and there were those that justified it using circular logic (i.e. slavery was OK because people wanted to keep slaves). It was only when men of moral character started standing up to the slave traders/owners that the wheels were set in motion for the abolition of slavery. I draw a parallel to straight porn. - art
