re: PEARL JAM's new album - Backspacer - to be produced by Brendan O'Brien
Pearl Jam Debuts 'Fixer,' Reveals Track List
Pearl Jam's new single, "The Fixer," made an abbreviated debut last night (July 14) during Fox's broadcast of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The track officially goes to U.S. radio and digital retailers on Monday. As previously reported, Target will be the exclusive big-box retailer in the United States for Pearl Jam's self-released ninth album, "Backspacer," due Sept. 20. The clip for "The Fixer" was only a few seconds long, but it was long enough to discern catchy "yeah yeah yeah" shout-outs in its chorus and frontman Eddie Vedder imploring that when "something's gone, I want to fight to get it back again." Yesterday, Pearl Jam's official Web site, began taking pre-orders for CD and vinyl versions of "Backspacer" as well as a 7-inch single for "The Fixer" backed with "Supersonic." The order page confirms the 11-track contents of "Backspacer," which features three songs recently premiered during Vedder's U.S. solo tour: "Unthought Known," "Speed of Sound" and "The End." The band debuted "Got Some," another "Backspacer" track, on June 1 on "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien." As previously reported, Pearl Jam will return to the road Aug. 8 in Calgary, Alberta, and has dates on tap through Oct. 30 in Philadelphia. Reportedly added to the itinerary is a rare small venue show on Aug. 11 at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. U.K. retailer HMV is currently advertising a ticket presale offer which fans can enter by preordering "Backspacer" via the HMV Web site. Here is the track list for "Backspacer": "Gonna See My Friend" "Got Some" "The Fixer" "Johnny Guitar" "Just Breathe" "Amongst the Waves" "Unthought Known" "Supersonic" "Speed of Sound" "Force of Nature" "The End" BILLBOARD.com

Really dig THE FIXER. Great tune (however I thought it was supposed to hit iTunes on Monday and so far I can't find it - only heard it on myspace).

Listened to this song about 75 times yesterday, and I'm still not feeling it.

That's like eating a huge meal and saying that you didn't like it at all...after you've eaten it.

I'm so-so on the new song.
I'm more concerned about the very short tracklisting for the new disc ![]() |

11 tracks isn't too bad, since most PJ records are around 11/12/13. I see no problem with that.

Wow, an album by Pearl Jam under 37 minutes......is Ed Ved trying to be the next Jack White?

Eh, it's not really that much shorter than Vs....I mean, that album is 46 minutes long, but has 12 songs, including the 6 minute long W.M.A., so take that one away and Backspacer ends up being only a few minutes shorter for the same number of tracks....

Anyone hear any other songs? I'm anxious to hear them do Coldplay and The Doors.

I couldn't disagree more....I think it is even better then I had expected it would be....I absolutely love this album...
![]() I only wish it was a couple songs longer! I hope every song gets played at least once on the tour so I can hear if they will all translate well live.... |

re: PEARL JAM's new album - Backspacer - to be produced by Brendan O'Brien
First listen thru... can't say it blew me away but it's still solid PJ, and I think Ed sounds a lot better this time out. Songs that stood out for me.... Fixer, Amongst the Waves, Force of Nature.
Edit: Okay after listening some more and revisiting the older albums a bit I'm gonna say it's the best since Yield. Last edited by Artman; 09-13-09 at 12:35 PM. |

re: PEARL JAM's new album - Backspacer - to be produced by Brendan O'Brien
Really digging the record and will definitely get it for Rock Band. It is short, but I'd rather have an album that leaves me wanting more than one that seems to go on forever (riot act)... It's a very tight album and I like the balance of up tempo numbers with the ballady sort of stuff....

Nice recap of the various releases, and sheds a little more light on the Target versions (tho still no prices)

Multiple listens have improved my attitude on it substantially.

re: PEARL JAM's new album - Backspacer - to be produced by Brendan O'Brien
I haven't listened to the album yet, but I'm pretty excited.
Also, I'm not in the US, but I have to say, a Target exclusive (or ANY exclusive, for that matter) is extremely lame, especially for a band like Pearl Jam. edit: I see that some indie stores will get it too, but only if they're part of the Coalition. Interesting...

Buy it from their website directly then.....or on iTunes....
The Target deal is for the USA only, it is being handled differently internationally.... |

re: PEARL JAM's new album - Backspacer - to be produced by Brendan O'Brien
I'll be able to pick it up anywhere in Canada. That's not the issue.
I don't know, I just get the feeling that bands go the 'exclusive retailer' route when they don't think the album will sell well, but they still want a lot of cash. Adding in a handful of indie stores is a nice gesture, but an empty one, in my opinion. Doesn't matter. I'll be buying the album at my choice of retailer in Canada ![]()
