If you were in a band, what songs would you cover?
Was just thinking about this the other day. When I was in a band in HS and College, long long ago, we used to do a few covers. We were a punk band that did Country Boy Can Survive and Rock of Ages (the Def Leppard one). If you guys were in a band now, what songs would you cover? I think now I would want to do Suffragette City by Bowie and Wasted Years by Maiden (first song I learned on the guitar).

If the band I'm in doesn't want to cover Everlong, I'm out the door.
I prefer to cover songs slightly out of the mainstream but still recognizable. I also like to rework 80's songs into a modern feel.

for those of you into karoke, I suggest you try doing "Tears in Heaven." Nothing will take the life out of room like a poorly (or well) done version of that song.

Well, I am in a band, but we don't do any covers. If we did do covers, I'd think about:
"Bound For Glory" - Woody Guthrie/trad.
"Born To Lose" - The Heartbreakers
"Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" - Cher
"Not Up To You" - Stereophonics
"Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" - Waylon Jennings
"Six Days On the Road" - Dave Dudley
"Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)" - Bob Dylan and the Band
"Are You Gonna Be There (at The Love-in)" - Chocolate Watch Band
"Little Miss Queen of Darkness" - The Kinks
"Mr. Carbohydrate" - Manic Street Preachers
"I Can Only Give You Everything" - Them
"Ain't No Love In the Heart of the City" - Bobby "Blue" Bland
That's a dozen, probably enough for one set.

We were playing at a fundraiser event at a museum that would have a lot of "hipsters" attending. So we thought instead of our originals that no one knew, we'd play some covers - but "cool, hip" covers for this crowd of hip intellectuals.
To give you an idea, our set included covers of songs by Pavement, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, etc. along with obscure songs from Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, etc. - stuff that this crowd should have dug - they didn't. We played the songs just fine, btw - there wasn't a problem with our performance, the people just weren't into the songs.
So during a transition, just on a lark, I bust out the intro to Louie Louie with the whole band joining in (we've never ever played that song before), and holy shit, everyone's ears perked up, and people actually started dancing and totally getting into it. We went on to play some more popular stuff like a couple Clash tunes (Train In Vain and Should I Stay), we had a girl singer we know in the audience sing I Will Survive for us, we even did Seager's fucking Old Time Rock n' Roll Music, a song I HATE, and the crowd freaking loved it. And the whole night was a blast from there on...

I'd start with a couple of Foghat tunes Don't Run Me Down & I just Want to Make Love To You. and maybe a third one, Honey Hush. then move on to Molly Hatchet- Cheatin Woman and Big Apple. Throw in some old Aerosmith- Toys in the Attic, Combination, Walkin the Dog. finish up with some Cream-, SWBLAR ? Crossroads and Hendrix- Killing Floor, Stone Free, Rock Me Baby And I can't forget my favorite band Thin Lizzy, with Cold Sweat, It's Only Money and Sugar Blues, Opium Trail and Suicide.
