Good performers make even music you don't like much better, while most of today's rock/punk/alternative/emo artists are out to make a good album first and get no love from me when they can't perform worth shit live.
I was sitting here having the same conversation with a few other people yesterday. I'm not a big fan of Will Smith, Robbie Williams, or Tim McGraw, but they put on great performances. I'm not going to be buying their albums, but they gained some more respect from me.

There are several groups that I enjoy seeing live, but I wouldn't buy one of their albums. A good live performance can go a long way in my book.

Ah yes, I completely forgot about tim mcgraw. That song "I went sky diving, I went..rocky mountain climbing...." was excellent. The first really good performance I saw. Also the crowd only version or Fresh Prince was very very cool IMO.

F*in cretins
More fool them if they missed out on The Who due to the f-word

Of course you shouldnt swear in every sentence or anything, but people do swear. Live with it.
This "we have to protect the children" nonsense does annoy me.

Classy.

Like a Prayer was absolutely amazing. I've actually watched it a few times on DVD (thanks to the BBC) and never fail to get chills. Madonna was the best act I saw that day and that's not just because I'm a huge fan. My family and a few friends were watching it with me and agreed. She just took hold of the audience and didn't let them go. if anything, it made the wait for the re-invention tour even worse. That song was the highlight of the entire show for me.

I'm sure this has been said, over and over. But, I'm not reading all the previous posts. I don't have all day.

MTVs coverage sucked. Play 30 seconds of this performer, interrupt with stupid VJs talking back and forth (or to the crowd), then go back for another 30 seconds before going to commercial. It took me about an hour to get through their entire 8 hours of coverage.

I have to disagree with you in regards to the "amazing" part. It was very good but I wouldn't say "amazing".

The performance of Like a Prayer is very similar to what she does in her Reinvention tour. Having gone to the concert in September here in Toronto, I felt that she didn't bring anything "special" to the Live 8 performance.

Well, I set up my DVR to record MTV's broadcast, but it didn't work for some reason (lack of space, maybe?). Sounds like I didn't really miss out. I did record ABC's recap - there was only a few acts I was interested in, though. There were a bunch of artists that I wanted to see, but I doubt they got US face time. Thanks to the people posting the links (I'm downloading the Pink Floyd file right now).

This concert was for a good cause, but was there any awareness raised about the rampant corruption in Africa, which prevents a good deal of the aid sent from reaching the people that need it most? Guess that may have been a buzzkill, but something really needs to be done about that.

I don't think it'd be that hard to give the gift bag to someone in your entourage and have him or her put it up on ebay, then donate the proceeds. At least, that's what I'd do if I was already making Will Smith-sized coin.

Exactly. You saw it already...so it may not have been as special to you. But to those who haven't...taking it on it's own accord...it was pretty amazing. I believe the BBC compared it Freddie Mercury from the original Live Aid. She was pretty universally praised for her performance on all the news outlets as being a stand-out. I guess that's for the people young enough not to care about The Who or Pink Floyd.

That's right, I forgot to add the IMHO part in my post.

Hmmm. I wouldn't even go so far as to give it a "very good". I've been dying to check it out, and just did so on AOL. "Like a Prayer" was decent, but lacking somehow. The other two songs were almost dreadful. Sorry, but techno is a bad choice for a stadium setting. She has at least two dozen other songs which would have driven that crowd wild, but went with "Ray of Light" and "Music" (which is a terrible song to begin with)? Odd. Maybe I'm just not entertained by breakdancing the way I should be.

My office-mate is a head over heels Madonna fan and even he walked away after "Like A Prayer".

I will, I though it was pretty good but definitely not fantastic.

And the BBC comparing it to Queen from Live Aid?

I like VH-1 Classic's highlights show... a solid hour with no commercials, but some good things not shown on original broadcast (Def Leppard, Pet Shop Boys) as well as expected highlights (Sgt Pepper, Like a Prayer, Floyd, Who)

"Music" was lyrically appropriate though if anything. "Music makes the people come together..."

Also finally saw Madonna's incessantly praised performance....not that impressive, IMO. I think Robbie Williams was much better, and I don't even care much for him (why do people think he's cute?).

Pink Floyd and The Who were far, far better, as were U2. And I wasn't even born when Dark Side of the Moon came out! I was really moved during the solo in "Comfortably Numb"...just amazing.

Well...i know who those 3 are because they're iconic and worthy of being remembered. I also worked in oldies radio for 9 years so leave the sarcasm with your mama please. Just don't see what's so big about The Who and Pink Floyd. Don't know their music and wondering if I should. Since people are bashing my babe and putting them on a pedestal...i'd just like to know why.

Maybe it's a hard rock thing. No one I know listens to them...of ANY age. FWIW my parents loved madonna's performance and they're of the age where The Who and PF would've been popular.

Is everyone going to sit there and be shocked or is someone going to explain it?

The only reference I might have to either of them is I know The Who did Tommy but I've never seen it. And the only song I've heard is the title song.

Don't judge all of my musical tastes on one artist. And obsessed isn't exactly how i'd put it.

The people on this group are the only ones that seemed to be all crazy for this reunion and for the Who. So I'm being serious when I ask what all the hubub is over.

If you can't answer plainly and without insulting me, then don't bother answering at all.

Here are some links that should give you more insight (I hope) on who they are, their influence, discography.

For me the reason why the Who and Pink Floyd were so impressive was the fact that the Who has been together for 40 years (give and take a member or two) and they still sounded as if they were just starting out. For Pink Floyd, is seeing them reunited after all these years and performing like they never disbanded. That's magical.

Madonna performance did not reach this level.

The Who

Pink Floyd

OK thanks for that explanation. As I figured, it was more the experience of seeing these artists together again more than the performance themselves. Just seems like a personal interest...much like mine was. A little harsh to say they "owned" it when you're in another country and obviously are too emotionally invested in it to make an accurage judgement.

I'm wondering if either one had singles that charted very well on US charts. Don't have my Whitburn book near me at the moment. Anyone?
