"1...2.......1...2...3...4" --- anyone else find this stupid?

I've never really thought about it, but then upon watching Guns N' Roses VHI: Behind the Music the other night, and seeing Duff do his "1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4" during the "Patience" video, he looked so awkward and stupid it reminded me how useless it is.

Ok, now it's not "useless" to get everyone to start on the same beat -- that's quite imperative. However, I think it's useless and stupid to keep that on the record.

Who's with me??

It doesn't matter to me. I just wondered why they never just start the song on 3. They always start on 4.

Hear hear. I LOVE when they do it, but I'd guess it can sound stupid in the wrong hands.

Sheila E. does a variation of this at the beginning of her song "A Love Bizarre". She goes "A...B...A-B-C-D!" I thought it was kind of clever.

(crickets chirping)

never mind.

I always appreciated the first 1, 2 before the count...I think it was meant for people like me who like to chat and not pay attention. The first two is a call to attention and then the count off begins the song. Without it I would have messed up getting into the song a few times...so for idiots like me, gimmie the six beats.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Rush does it with a song called Animate and it rocks!

Songs are written in 16ths. You can cut them up in fours. That's why it's a four count that starts it.

Derek: One...Two... One...Two...Three....

Nigel: Stop! Wait a minute... Do we start ON "Four" or right after it?

Derek: Right after it.

Nigel: No we don't. We start on four.

David: No, we start after it.

Drummer: He's just the guitarist. He follows the rhytm section, so it doesn't matter what the thinks.

Derek: One... Two... One... Two...

Nigel: Doesn't fucking matter because I'm the guitarist?

David: You're the lead guitarist. We only need you for wanky solos. You don't even come on until after the first chorus.

Nigel: But still, it's good to know this.

Derek: One... Two... One... Two... Three...

[Drums begin]

David: Stop! Stop! Goddammit!

Drummer: What?

Derek: After four! After four!

Drummer: Oh, sorry. Nigel had me confused.

Nigel: A lot of people say that.

Derek: Okay, are we ready? One... Two... One... Two... Three... Four...

[From the second side of "Shark Sandwich."]

Or, to quote U2 "uno, dos, tres...catorce!" Still hate that.

Also, I love how these dudes came in just to say the poll sucks, then didn't vote on its substantivity: bdrules, benedict, Michael Corvin, RogueScribner, The Cow, tofu.

Guess I opened the door to that one.

The best count-in thus far HAS to be Def Leppard's "Rock Of Ages". Still makes me laugh to this day when I hear it.

What if he was quoting "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs?
