Today's CDs (or, the Listening Pile) (1/26/03 - 1/30/03)
Flaming Lips - Fight Test EP
St. Paul Chamber Orchestra - Mozart's Violin Concertos #1, 2 & 3 Shins - Chutes Too Narrow Strokes - Room On Fire Yo-Yo Ma/E. Meyer/M. O'Connor - Appalachian Journey QOTD: Excluding this website, what's the one website you go to for music info/gossip/chat... and why? My AOTD: There are a few others, but the one that probably helps my listening the most is www.altcountrytab.com, since the music reviewed and discussed on the fora most closely matches my personal musical tastes (which includes, obviously, alt-country and related artists). |

Explosions in the Sky, The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
Charambalides, Houston Boredoms, Super Ae Silver Apples, The Garden and consistent w/ my new found 8 song obsession, here is "Alex's List 'o 8 Songs for Lounging on a Sunday Morning (That is Also Great for Snowy Mondays)" 1. Gastr Del Sol - "Mouth Canyon" 2. The Microphones - "ii The Sun" 3. Landing - "Wrapped Up in Flight" 4. Birdtree - "Sleeper Under a Tree" 5. Campfire Songs - "Doggy" 6. Vashti Bunyan - "Diamond Day" 7. Mum - "Green Grass of Tunnel" 8. Do Make Say Think - "Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!" AoTD: I go to Tiny Mix Tapes, Dusted, Pitchfork, Neumu, and Village Voice for news and reviews (though I read the latter with much less consistency). I also participate in the forums at Matador Records and the Fake Matador Bulletin Board (off-shoot community). I lurk ILM because those people are too intimidating to actually carry on a conversation with. I also rather like Trouser Press. |

The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen (blew the dust off this little disc)
Air - Talkie Walkie Califone - Heron King Blues Camera Obscura [UK] - Underachievers Please Try Harder The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy (the 5 minutes of the Golden Globes that I caught last night put me in the mood to listen to this one) The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee (getting pumped for the new album next week!) Jim O'Rourke - Halfway to a Threeway Palace - Arise, Therefore Shearwater - Everybody Makes Mistakes M. Ward - Duet for Guitars #2 AOTD - I go to all the usual...pitchfork, tmt, neumu...and sometimes billboard.com, but only during really slow days at work. I don't usually make reviews the sole reason for purchasing CD's, but the collective reviews from those sites may persuade me to lean in a certain direction. I'd usually check out Metacritic.com if I'm interested in what the media thinks of albums, since their scoring system gives a good general idea. If I want specific news or gossip, I'll take a peek at individual band sites or discussion boards, because the hardcores seem to be on top of everything. |

Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
Skeleton Key - Obtanium Beatie Boys - Pauls Boutique Fantomas - ST Sublime - 40oz to Freedom Lots of Smashing Pumpkins lately, and DJ Shadow. AOTD: I don't like to participate in many music forums simply because most of the people that populate them are idiots. Plain and simple. I enjoy this one though, because for the most part people are mature and respectful. Music News I get from the major fan sites and official sites of the respective bands.

Nas - Illmatic
Raphael Saadiq - Instant Vintage Shabazz the Disciple - The Book Of Shabazz (Hidden Scrollz) AOTD: I'm not into websites specifically dedicated to music. Usually just sub-forums of main forums (such as DVDTalk). |

Never partook in this thread before. Since I fixed my cd player in my car I have been listening to more discs so here it goes.
Billy Bragg - Back to Basics/Don't Try this at Home (been hooked on Bragg lately for some reason, seems every few years i go through a binge) Skinny Puppy - Rabies/VIVIsectVI (getting ready for the new release) Black Lipstick - Four Kingdoms of Nurse With Wound/Stereolab - Crumbduck I have been going through my boxes of cd's since i moved a few months ago and have been listening to a mix of old stuff and new stuff. Q of the D: I don't really go to any sites for music news or whatnot, my cd collection is waaaay to big as it is now (around 2000)..i am trying to not add anymore for awhile.
