What ever happened to that other guy? The one who actually won the contest? Or even that chick from the year before? Aiken is the only one you hear about any more.

You mean Ruben Studdard. His album will be released next month. The record company wanted to delay it so both American Idol albums wouldn't compete with each other. Kelly Clarkson had several hits off of her platinum-selling album, Thankful.

Almost sounds as if I'm an AI fanatic. No, I'm not.

While checking out this article, I took a gander over at Billboard's review section.

Did anyone see the praise they heaped on this CD??

Billboard's review of Clay Aiken's album

Not only do they call it "the best pop album of 2003." No...they actually call it "an utter triumph of art and commerce" and allude to "Thriller."

Okay...so if anyone has dared listen to this "triumph" yet, how does it "measure" up? (Sure to be the tagline of every review this album receives..all three).

You can't put much stock in the reviews on Billboard. Take a gander sometime at some other reviews as a comparison. First, their reviews are rather vague. But they like everything!

Oh, my God!!!

That Billboard review seemed to go overboard in their praise of the album. Michael Bolton? Maybe Barry Manilow?

The CD has already received over a thousand reviews on Amazon and it has been out for only a week. Compare to Kelly Clarkson who has only 700 reviews and it's been out for over 6 months.

Nah...Barry has some talent [IMO he's written some pretty good songs -- no pun intended ]. Michael can't even threaten Conan O'Brien convincingly...

And, yeah, "you-know-who" had tons of threads that brought the funny...

RIB, my friend.

[perhaps we should start a petition to get him/her reinstated...? ]

I think I heard this sold 3 times (2 times?) as many discs out of the gate than Kelly. I can't believe how many people bought this CD... stunned.

Kelly Clarkson will be on an AI special next month. Methinks "you-know-who" will return in one form or another.

I've sorta been tracking Clay's album on Amazon and it's been near or at the top ever since the album was listed. So I'm not very surprised at all. I conclude that Clay has gotten people who normally don't buy music to buy his CD.

Definitely not triple. Couldn't remember the exact number, so I did a search on Google. Clarkson debuted at #1 as well with 297,000 units sold.

I'm also stunned Ed Grimley sold this many copies. Yet more proof how lousy the Top 40 is.

I like Clay. (Even though I'm a hard rock fan. ) I'm waiting for my friend to get it so I can listen to his album.

They have autographed copies of Clay's CD with proceeds going to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation on EBay. They were all up to around $700.00 yesterday.

Interesting thought. When I have kids I'm sure I won't be blasting the Sex Pistols around them, but OH MY can I think of hundreds of discs in my collection I'd rather force on my kids. They'll hear Clay while we are in McDonalds. They'll hear Van Morrison at home.

I was just coming in to post the link about Clay's album when I saw this thread.

At the risk of getting flamed, I think it's a heck of a debut for an artist. My wife and I both like the CD enough that we bought a 2nd copy for her to keep in her car.

I think that there are probably a lot of people making comments about his music who've never even listened to it.

Guilty pleasure or not, I'm enjoying his music.

I wouldn't buy the album, but I think he's a great guy and a very talented singer. If nothing else, there are many, many, many other singers who should be criticized before Aiken would make my list. Heaven forbid I have to hear that Madonna/Britney craptacular song again.
