The One and Only War Protest song list...
I've been accumulating a list of war protest songs and ones that are currently starting to come out with the new war going on (not sure if this topic is more relavent to the War Forum or here). I've also included some links here to sites that have MP3 downloads of some of these songs too for those wanting to sample them. www.peace-not-war.org www.protest-records.com www.anti-flag.com/MU40.php http://www.copsrus.com/17.7.html http://www.drownedinsound.com/audio.php http://www.folkmusic.com/t_mp3.htm http://www.fbirecords.com/stokingthefires.htm#songs I'll try to update with any additions or corrections that people see fit to recommend. I certainly haven't listened to *all* of these, and therefore could revise some of these selections if some feel otherwise who know the songs.

Your Audioslave song was originally done by Elvis Costello.

I have here both the covers and the originals (Elvis Costello is listed). Songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" are listed for three different artists. Many of these songs it is worth noting those who perform them as well as who wrote them.
Added War Child and War Song. Thanks. Help me out with "Regulate". I'm looking at the lyrics and am not seeing the connection to war protest themes. There are many here that referring to war very allegorically or peripherally so, don't want to exclude it if it is relevant. |

Scorpio... Added them, thanks. I think "Back to the Front" was actually "Disposable Heroes", correct?

just a joke dude. Regulate is not an anti-war song. It is kick-ass rap song though.

And for what it's worth, many of Metallica's songs are based on and around war, some more directly than others. ...And Justice For All One Disposable Heroes Phantom Lord Seek and Destroy For Whom the Bell Tolls Creeping Death - historical Egyptian content Don't Tread on Me just to name a few lots of their songs also include many references to oppression and what-not which also ties in to the themes of this war.

Life During Wartime isn't a Green Day song, it's Pinhead Gunpowder. Same lead singer.

I was under the impression that "Life During Wartime" is a Talking Heads song....

On the heavy metal tip, I can think of these:
Slayer, "Mandatory Suicide", from the album "South of Heaven" Slayer, "Behind the Crooked Cross," from the album "South of Heaven" Metal Church, "Method to Your Madness," from the album "The Dark" Iron Maiden, "2 Minutes to Midnight," from the album "Powerslave"

Wow, an acoustic version of Life During Wartime. It really is a Pinhead Gunpowder tune, though. It's on the album Goodbye, Elston Ave. Thanks for pointing me towards this new version, though.

Umm, I'm not very familiar with his work, but it wouldn't surprise me if Cat Stephens has a fair amount of protest songs.

Cat Stevens does have what some might consider a black eye in his history for his echoing of the Ayatollah's call to take out Salman Rushdie for bad-mouthing Islam in The Satanic Verses, since Cat Stevens had converted to Islam earlier. Someone let me know if there are some more of his tunes that fit this category. |
