This week's open letter to a band: Kittie

Dear Kittie,

My God, what is that awful noise coming out of your amps and your speakers?

If they made a CD filled with white noise, I'd be more inclined to purchase that than I would to purchase any of your albums.

I just watched a bit of your live special on MTV2 and after completely butchering a Pink Floyd song, I've come to the conclusion that you are completely devoid of any sort of musical skill and talent.

I must say though, that it did crack me up to hear a female let loose with a metal-esque roar into the microphone.

But please, no more.

However, do consider my white noise suggestion. It did well for Trent Reznor (Downward Spiral) *hides from NIN fans*

Love,
DTSC

And thus ends DTSC's streak of writing about bands I actually heard of.

Oh come on J, Kittie has plenty of talent. I think it is just because you aren't a part of the genre, so you don't respect it. To you it just may be screams, but to some of us it's music.

Here, *chucks a snowball at DTSC*

That's for the NIN comment. As far as Kittie goes, rocking chicks are cool.

Hey now, I actually like some of the stuff in the genre -- yep, even stuff with screaming -- but the stuff I heard coming from them was horrible.

Metal isn't, nor ever has been, just "screams" to me.

Screaming when singing is cool. The low, drawn-out growls are cheesy and LAME.

Agree with you DTSC, they suck hard.

Honestly, if they were men and they sounded like that, I don't think they would even have a record label. They are just a talentless novelty act. The fact that they are women is "the rub".

Now, now, I don't dismiss the band as being bad and profiting off of a "girls that growl" gimmick.. I just dismiss the band as being bad.

You don't have to. I will

You should probably start another one of these threads, since few of us seem to know who Kittie is.

If you want a suggestion, I will volunteer AC/DC. Mainly due to the fact that they have remade the same song for twenty years, and their sexual puns are reminiscent of Spinal Tap

I myself, like Kittie. I was going to go see them last month but it SOLD OUT before I could get tickets. I really enjoyed the first album "Spit". while the second album "Oracle", fails to compare to the first album I still enjoyed it.

What was the Floyd song?

Kittie sucks because they are just another bad nu-metal band.

Agreed. Loathe as I am to say this, if they were men, they'd never have a record deal. Aside from the novelty of teenaged girls playing heavy metal, there's not much there.

Their studio albums are listenable -- the lyrics aren't bad, the production adequate. Their live shows are godawful.

I just actually broke out some NIN for the first time and revisited my high school anger.

I have to say that listening to NIN, especially Pretty Hate Machine, and Broken makes me realize how bland and uninteresting todays music is...well at least all the crap getting airplay.

I think I am just currently too lazy to find new stuff...I just listen to classic rock all the time.

Yeah, those were the good ol' days when music had some creativity to it. something fresh and new.

Hey now, I only made a dig at the Downward Spiral. That album sucked.

PHM and Broken were awesome though. Teen angst revisited!

I haven't heard Kittie either. I detest the boring rap-core stuff and might not like 'em. Although they are not an all-girl band, as far as female lead singers go... I'll take the Muffs.

The Muffs are really good. Also Sleater-Kinney, some Bikini Kill, a little Bratmobile, and a few other bands have great female led (or all female sounds).

Gotta disagree with that one. I think Pretty Hate Machine is Trents tamest effort. I just think Downward Spiral is very raw...yes the "white noise" can get a little annoying sometimes, and I think it was waaaaaay to electronically driven (and that is saying something when talking about NIN) but it had the rawest anger off all his efforts.

I mean Heresy just lays it out on the table where Terrible Lie just scratched the surface.

But like I always say to each there own, everyones opinion on music is valid.
