Who did Universe on the Tonight Show? Was it the Sean Lennon-Rufus Wainright duet that they did for the Lennon tribute concert?

A couple favorite covers:

Replacements -- "Another Girl, Another Planet," originally done by the Only Ones
Rolling Stones -- "That's How Strong My Love Is," originally done by Otis Redding

"Astronomy Domine" by Voivod (originally by Pink Floyd)
"Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana (originally by Bowie)
"Come on Eileen" by Save Ferris (Dexie's Midnight Runners)

I also like Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" and STP's "Dancing Days." One reason I think some people might prefer these to the originals is the slicker production that modern artists have.

I also, for some reason, like to hear women singing songs originally recorded by men. Except if it's by Tori Amos -- that girl just butchers covers. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is just awful.

Actually, no I'm not a Beatles fan at all....I just hate Fiona Apple.

I wasn't saying you said she was better than the Beatles. The topic is COVERS you think are better than the original.

I love the Fiona Apple "Across the Universe" remake.

And I'd like to add "John B. Sloop" from the Beach Boys. Really cool song.

I can't believe you didn't read this thread; someone did mention that. Look at Alyoshka's post.

I sometimes think I'm the only person who cringes in pain when I hear Kurt Cobain slaughtering this song. The guitar on this cover is good, but Cobain sings it HORRIBLY. He's off key and sounds like HE can't even stand the sound of his singing. Ugh.

Ok. All you people who dislike The Beatles' "Across the Universe": are you talking about the awful, slowed down version on Let It Be with the Phil Spector strings & choir - or the lovely, catchy "wildlife" version with the bird sounds that's found on the Past Masters Vol. 2 cd?

If you've only heard Let it Be, I can understand, but if you hate the other version... you might be a little nutty.

Re: "Baby One More Time" cover --

It's done by Travis. I heard them cover it live back in April 2000.

Actually, they both did it. The Travis version circulating is live acoustic. There is also a full studio version by Fountains of Wayne - I think an unreleased would-be B-side...

I don't know if this is technically a cover, but Page & Plant re-doing "Kashmir" on their on their "UnLedded" album. It sounds so much fuller and smoother than their original version with Led Zeppelin.

Rufus Wainwright - "Hallelujah" - originally done by Jeff Buckley (and possibly someone before Buckley, too)

Fire bad!

Lemonheads' "Mrs. Robinson". Not that Simon and Garfunkel's version was bad, but the Lemonheads' version was the first cover I ever heard where I thought, "Now, that was cool." Although I understand artists' desire to slavishly emulate an influential song, I'd much rather have the artists bring their own sensibility to the song.

SRV, voodoo child, and little wing

I love covers, I like to see bands create a "new" version of an old tune.

I don't like covers that sound exactly the same, most of the stuff from the "IamSam" soundtrack sound far too much like the original versions for my tastes.

If you're gonna do it, make them your own.

Then why are you mentioning Voodoo Child (Slight Return) by Stevie Ray?
It is almost identical to the Hendrix version, although he does bring something new to Little Wing.

Speaking of the Beatles
How about:
Anna
Till There Was You
Twist And Shout
Mr. Moonlight
Dizzy Miss Lizzie
Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey

I enjoy Travis's remake. Not as good as the original but I really do like the sound they put to it. I think I have it on mp3, also is a live track.

Pearl Jam- Rockin' in the Free World, Last Kiss, Crazy Mary and Masters of War (though that was just Vedder and McCready at the Dylan tribute.)

Dave Matthews Band- The Long Black Veil

Stone Temple Pilots- Dancing Days

Jimi Hendrix- All Along the Watchtower. (this is true for a lot of
Dylan's songs, he's a great song writer, but can't sing a lick IMO)

The Lemonheads- Mrs. Robinson

Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
