Nelly Furtado-- Your Thoughts?
Just wondering, what are your thoughts on Nelly Furtado? I'm not a fan of pop music and shes one of the few that I really don't have a problem with.

Her album is average IMO. I saw her live and she was absolutely terrible. Maybe it was an off day but I can't stand these artists that sound okay in the studio but get them live and they sound like crap (Mary J. Blige anyone?)

I saw this album advertised at Circut City for $7.99 before I had even heard of her. I checked out a couple of reviews on the net and decided to pick it up for that price. She's cute, upbeat with some catchy tunes and I liked the whole album. Then came the two singles on MTV and the radio (over and over). I still like her but don't listen to this album to much anymore because of over-exposure.

Her music doesn't do much for me one way or another, but after reading a Q Magazine interview with her in which she basically says she's now where she belongs, with the beautiful people , and the high class life and she's leaving "ordinary" behind, I sorta mentally placed her in the "Flake" category.

I rarely like pop, and even more rarely like female pop. I don't have this album, but I think "Like a Bird" is a great song.
I saw her do an in house on Muchmusic, and I was very impressed, particularly for her age. I believe that she co-produced her record....and with the excellent instrumentation, wide array of cultural musical influences, and unusual melodies, I think that's a positive sign. If I see it at the used shop for four bucks, I'll pick it up and give it a shot.

Oh, I hate her too. Not only does she look like a skanky Courtney Cox, but her music is just terrible. And it pains me that her album has sold 2 million copies in the U.S. alone when Aimee Mann can barely muster up any sales for her music. What a world we live in.

Well, I would have to agree with that point. But then again, I like that the intelligent and talented ones never get discovered. It confirms that I'm smarter than the general public .

Yeah, I like our "exclusive" club. Don't you hate it when people say "Well so and so is clearly a good artist, just LOOK at how many copies their album sold". Umm.

Aimee Mann is one of a hundred artists in my CD collection that my friends have never heard of, and they have put out the best damn_music around.
The number of albums sold is directly proportional to the number of 14 year old girls or boys that think they are cute.

I didn't like her at first but after some thought and listening I find I do like her voice.
I also think she's not to bad looking.

Aimee Mann (as seen most recently in the Magnolia OST) is a very talented singer and songwriter, but not a pop artist.
Nelly Furtado is a pop artist.
Completely different thing. Compare Aimee Mann to Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, etc.
Compare Nelly Furtado to Britney, Christina, etc. I think she stands clearly above them all. Wonderful instrumentations, excellent arrangements, interesting voice, good use of portuguese... I think and hope that she'll go far. I will admit I am biased, I got my younger sister the Nelly Furtado CD fall of 2000 and she loves it (as do I). She might be a bit played out now but just because radio plays her doesn't mean she sucks (case in point: Coldplay does not).

Of course she's a pop artist. She's certainly not rock or soul or jazz. Maybe when you compare Aimee to Britney or those other teen puppets you might not label her pop. And I wasn't comparing Aimee to Nelly as an artist. I said it ticks me off when someone like Nelly can sell millions of albums and Aimee can't. But she certainly has written (and recorded) her fair share of pop songs. "I Should've Known" and "That's Just What You Are" are just two that come to mind.

And btw, Aimee is listed under "pop artists" at CDNow.
