What's the best band I've never heard of?

I'm afraid i'm getting stuck in a time warp and I need to find some new music to listen to. Please post your favorite lesser known bands here so that I can check them out and get out of the musical early 90's.

Please no country or hard rock bands, also no bubblegum pop crap. Hip-hop, jazz, alternative, folksy stuff, whatever. I have pretty eclectic tastes.

Please note if your band's music is available online, or if I'll have to search for it in the music stores.

Thanks! I'd love to hear some new good music.

Well if you like dance music, I recommend getting Modern Talking. Avoid the 90s stuff, get the 80s.

Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Camel
Jeff Buckley
DJ Shadow
Death Cab For Cutie
Built to Spill
Modest Mouse

There are many others, but I'll just stick with these for now.

If you can track down one of their albums, check out a Pittsburgh band called "the Clarks." Straight forward rock and roll, and excellent songwriting.

I've turned quite a few people on to them so far.

My favorite band is The Wedding Present from England.

Jangly melodies, heartfelt lyrics. Very prolific. They have but out several compilations in addition to their studio LPs. The compilations have soem great cover songs on them such as the Twin Peaks Theme "Falling", "Pleasant Valley Sunday". They even do a few Altered Images covers and a Pavement tune!

My favorite album of theirs is "Watusi".

I also highly recommend a Wedding Present side-project called Cinerama. Very smooth, almost loungy pop that reminds me of a 1960's James Bond film soundtrack.

Other bands I dig are Idaho, Tindersticks, and Versus.

Placebo
JJ72
(both have a deep Joy Division influence while Placebo's Brian molko has that Bowie androgyny thing without being a silly Marilyn Manson type parody)

Travis
Coldplay

(both have a very melodic, mellow feel)

Suede
(glamish Bowie influences)

Gene
(the true succesors to the Smiths while not being highly derivative)

Stone Roses
(why these guys wearn't huge in the U.S. speaks more about the conservatism of U.S. radio than it does about their talent)

Helen Love
(picked up where Joey Ramone left off. Very fun band)

Red Elvises- they do a little of everything, but for the real experience, you have to see them live. I'd put the website link up, but it isn't working at the moment.

THE STROKES - newish rock band from NYC with some slightly distorted vocals and terrific chorus and tunes, 11 tracks in 37 min.

THE WHITE STRIPES - absolutely 'raw' brother/sister duo out of Detroit.......latest (3rd) album "White Blood Cells."

I will list some people that many consider mainstream but I do not know many people who listen to them:

Cocteau Twins (tons of albums but not one hit)
Level 42 (two minor hits but they have tons of great music that no one hears, at least in the U.S.)
Erasure (another group with a couple of minor hits but tons of albums that get little to no airplay)
Lords of Acid (techno-sex music)
