Of course there's the Sean Young/Catwoman debacle, and other actors through the years interested in parts, but has it ever worked, and if so, were they good in the role?

Samuel L. Jackson announced on Leno (I think) when he heard that Lucas was making new Star Wars films that he didn't care if he was a storm trooper as long as he was in it. that's how we got Mace Windu.

Didn't Ryan Reynolds basically do this with Deadpool?

And he got his first shot at that role in Wolverine: Origins.

We were on so close to what would have been a glorious Nicholas Cage as Superman train wreck.

One of the most famous campaigns was Sinatra for the role of Private Angelo Maggio in From Here to Eternity. The film revitalized his career which was at it's lowest point before he got the role.

Not necessarily a campaign, but Richard Pryor raving about Superman II on Carson is what got him Superman III.
