Re: Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen -- REBOOT (D: Neil Marshall) S: David Harbour

I have an admiration for both the director (I actually liked Doomsday, guilty pleasure) and the actor, but I too cannot understand why they're willing to drop money on a more risky R rated reboot than a PG-13 one with GDT and Perlman for probably the same amount of money.

I like the first two films but Perlman was the perfect casting as Hellboy in my opinion. Not overly excited about this but I'll wait to see the footage.

I agree and before I clicked on this thread I was thinking he was still going to be Hellboy and Del Toro wasn't directing. Getting another director's vision is no big deal but replacing Perlman is stupid.

Neil Marshall (The Descent) is directing and David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) is our new Hellboy in the upcoming feature Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, which will reboot the franchise with a brand new rated R adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comic books. And it’s going to be dark, gruesome and bloody!

Speaking with Mick Garris on the latest episode of Post Mortem, Marshall noted that he doesn’t intend on pulling any punches with his adaptation.

“We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off,” he told Garris. “It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. Nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.”

Marshall continued, “It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it. I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real.”

The Millennium Films project has already been scripted by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Mike Mignola. It is being executive produced by Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Hampe.

Look for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen in 2018.

I like David Harbour, but don't think I will ever get over the fact we didn't get a proper conclusion to Del Toro's version

Lionsgate in Talks to Pick Up 'Hellboy' Reboot

David Harbour will star as the demonic creation of comic book author and artist Mike Mignola.
The Hellboy reboot that will star Stranger Things’ David Harbour as the title character may have found a home.

Lionsgate is in final negotiations to pick up the project, which is titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and has Neil Marshall on board to direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing, as is Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.

Hellboy is a unique franchise in that so far each installment has been released by a different studio. Adapting the works of comic creator Mike Mignola, the first movie was made by Revolution Studios and released by Sony in 2004. The sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army, was made by Universal and released in 2008.

Both movies were directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman as a demon raised by a kind, and human, professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Del Toro and Perlman tried to launch a third installment, but budgetary issues proved to be challenging and the producers decided to instead venture forward with a reboot.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is eyeing a fall shoot.

Well, if they're eying a fall shoot then that means they're in full-blown pre-production right now. It's happening and I don't know how I feel about that.

Given I can take or leave the two Del Toro HB movies (and really can take or leave any Del Toro films anyway), I'm okay with this. Won't see it in theaters, however.

Re: Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen -- REBOOT (D: Neil Marshall) S: David Harbour

Eh, De Toro is a bit overrated. He can make some fun stuff, but I wouldn't consider him great, specially his Hellboy and Pacific Rim films he's mainly been focused on over the last few years. I still consider Blade II my most favorite comic book movie of his (never got the love for Pan's Labyrinth). Hellboy himself was always a bit underdeveloped in the movies, and by no means sacred from a reboot. Plus a Hellboy 3 seems a little too little too late.

Re: Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen -- REBOOT (D: Neil Marshall) S: David Harbour

I really enjoyed the existing two movies (especially the first one....satanic cult nazi's always add to a movie), but i am not averse to a reboot. By the end of the second movie of GDT's i was not happy about Hellboy having a kid. I wanted to see something more akin to the end of the first movie where his destiny to be the destroyer of worlds is brought forth. Perlman was great as Hellboy and it would have been nice to see him return, but i think they have found a solid replacement. Just keep that costume and design the same. It was spot on. I am curious to see how this turns out.

Yeah, I finally watched the first movie the other day, and while it was enjoyable, I didn't see it as this great, cult-classic event.

I see there's a ton of comic stories, are they much different than what we saw in the movie.

Harbour will star as the titular demonic hero, based on the Mike Mignola comic books. The film is titled “Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.”

Lane will play the role of Alice Monaghan, who is rescued in the origin stories by Hellboy from the fairies that kidnapped her. Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane also are attached to star.

“The Descent” director Neil Marshall is on board to helm. The new story sees Harbour’s hero squaring off against a sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind. The project will shoot in the U.K. and Bulgaria.

^ Not sure I necessarily agree but good on Ed Skrein for standing up for what he thinks is right.

I look forward to the announcement of Sam Worthington as his replacement...
