This. Exactly this.

Yeah, there is a lot of crap on there, posted by idiots, but for small and independent films, you could often find some useful information. Particularly stuff like 'similar films' and 'whatever happened to this actor' type stuff.

Social media is absolutely useless for this kind of thing. Most things have already been asked by someone else, so you can just pop on and get your answer.

Fuck..

Re: IMDb is shutting down their message board

Anywhere you go, anything you do, there will always be a group of people who ruin it for everyone else by being complete and utter assholes. But instead of dealing with the assholes, places would rather just close up shop and leave everyone who spent all their time making it a home, hanging out to dry.

Cesspools of humanity.....a good phrase to describe the assholes who thrive on ruining a good thing for everyone else.

Exactly. And even for the comedy movies, peoole would ask very specific questions that would lead to entertaining discussions.

That sucks, I just started posting there again. I just went over there and checked, they are still there until February 20th. If anything its a good way for movie studios to gauge interest on their movies, hell we probably caused this because of Ghostbusters.

Re: IMDb is shutting down their message board

Never posted there but after after pretty much every movie I watch, I check the board on IMDb. 90% of the threads are worthless, but that 5-10% with a useful tidbit or interesting discussion would be well worth it.

You couldn't possibly be more wrong. Here's an example of some fantastic information about the movie Grand Prix that I would have never found without the helping hand of IMDb message board: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060472/...1021#260891021

Thanks for that link. I watched GRAND PRIX last year and didn't notice that. Don't know if I want to see the film again just to catch that (it was pretty terrible), but it might be worth searching through for it.

I would prefer an updated board with heavier moderating. The formatting was awful, no way to get rid of signatures that I could find, and comments going way off topic. Aside from that, like others mentioned, there was sometimes good info to be found.

I agree.

I have to wonder if it was about the atmosphere or that IMBD wanted to cut costs (i.e. bandwidth, server space, staff).

That plus imagine how many complaints they get daily. Not worth the pain in the ass.

The format always sucked and was annoying to scroll through. I mean, still worth it for a quality tidbit or opinion here or there. Just seemed like they didn't really give a shit about those boards.

They should've just disabled the board function from new releases. Those are basically unreadable because they get a million posts and almost all are worthless.

Re: IMDb is shutting down their message board

I just watched the Horror film "Let Us Prey" and went to the message boards where the director of the film posted in one of the threads giving insight on a particular problem some people had with the film. This is not the first time where a director posted on the message boards, and another reason why closing the boards will be a sad day for me.

I'm not sure how moderation would even be possible. There are boards for every movie, tv show, actor, and director. That's tens of thousands of boards to cover. They would need an army of moderators, and the most popular movies, tv shoes, and actors get spammed and trolled constantly.

Keith Gordon would routinely post on the message boards for the films he's made.

Re: IMDb is shutting down their message board

I'm surprised IMDB wouldn't try to sell their message board info to a third party as a separate website.

I'm sure there's still ad revenue that could be made by keeping it going.

I don't think there would be enough ad revenue to compensate for the sale, much less upkeep. I doubt it would be cheap.

Re: IMDb is shutting down their message board

I'll miss some of the posts about films but one aspect I won't miss are the message boards for individual actors.

IMDB never should have allowed message boards for actors as they seem to attract every troll known to man. They make "Mean Tweets" look respectable.

Some poor actor will have so many unpleasant things said about them and those posts never go away.

There you'd be wrong. The biggest flaw of the imdb message boards is that they would purge old content.
