Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a pioneer and legendary host on the late-night talk-show circuit. When she’s accused of being a “woman who hates women,” she puts affirmative action on the to-do list, and—presto!—Molly (Mindy Kaling) is hired as the one woman in Katherine’s all-male writers’ room. But Molly might be too little too late, as the formidable Katherine also faces the reality of low ratings and a network that wants to replace her. Molly, wanting to prove she’s not simply a diversity hire who’s disrupting the comfort of the brotherhood, is determined to help Katherine by revitalizing her show and career—and possibly effect even bigger change at the same time. LATE NIGHT is in theaters June 7th.

Seems a bit steep, frankly.

Yes, somewhat. I think this is the highest they've gone. For comparison, they spent $12mil on The Big Sick.

I guess they're hoping for similar returns by capitalizing on that one? I'm just not getting the same level of funny in that trailer, though. Feels kinda tame.

Feels like a season 1 recap to a 10 episode tv series.

That's exactly what crossed my mind. Feels more like a TV series.

I can't look at Mindy Kaling since she fucked with her mouth. She looks beyond stupid.

A woman talk-show host? A bit unbelievable that she could lift that heavy microphone.

Re: Late Night (2019, W: Kaling / D: Ganatra) S: Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling

The wide release on this got pushed back a week:

EXCLUSIVE: Disney franchises like Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin have feasibly conquered the summer box office, leaving a string of recent female comedies — Long Shot, The Hustle and Booksmart — as collateral damage. However, Amazon Studios is hoping that its $13 million Sundance acquisition Late Night becomes an anomaly and not part of the trend.

Rather then going wide as planned this weekend, Amazon opted to ratchet up word of mouth for the Mindy Kaling-starring Working Girl-inspired comedy, changing gears last week for a limited launch on Friday at the Angelika and AMC Lincoln Square in New York, and The Landmark and Hollywood Arclight in Los Angeles. It’s a partial page out of the distribution book for Amazon’s summer 2017 comedy The Big Sick, another hefty Sundance pickup at $12M, which platformed for three weeks into the Independence Day holiday period before busting wide in its fourth weekend (mid-July) to $7.5M at 2,597 theaters on its way to a $42.8M final domestic take (a 5.7x multiple off its wide opening). It scored an Oscar nom for original screenplay and two SAG noms, for Best Ensemble and Holly Hunter as supporting actress. Lionsgate released The Big Sick on behalf of Amazon before the studio brought its distribution ops in-house.

Currently, tracking has Late Night, the comedy that Kaling also wrote and produced, in the mid-single digits for the weekend of June 14-16 against Sony’s Men in Black: International and New Line’s Shaft. (Focus Features’ Cannes Film Festival opener The Dead Don’t Die will debut in roughly 500 theaters that weekend.)

Says Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies, Amazon Studios about the release date change strategy, “We looked at other marketing beats that would build additional word of mouth to ensure that women in groups watch Late Night.”

I got around to seeing this over the weekend. I thought it was enjoyable, but I have no idea what Amazon was thinking spending that much money on distribution rights. That $13m is all this has made so far domestically. Variety reported they may lose $40mil. Looking at The Big Sick comparison, Amazon co-distributed with Lionsgate. They were sole distributor on this.

Watched it tonight and absolutely loved it. Emma Thompson was fantastic. And the script was super smart. Mindy Kaling deserves recognition for her screenplay during awards season IMO. Such a great little film. Could possibly make my top 10 of 2019.

Just curious, why did you think it was terrible? I know it's not your type of film. There are so many movies that I didn't connect with, but they weren't necessarily bad.
