During the summer of 1979, a Santa Barbara single mom and boardinghouse landlord (Annette Bening) decides the best way she can parent her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zumann) is to enlist her young tenants - a quirky punk photographer (Greta Gerwig), a mellow handyman (Billy Crudup) and her son's shrewd best friend (Elle Fanning) - to serve as role models in a changing world.

I liked Mills' previous two films, Beginners and Thumbsucker.

Watching this now. Unexpected. Very good. Bening should have been nominated...

This was good. I liked the incorporation of punk.

I don't think Benning would've warranted a nomination though.

I love the cast in this, all 5 of them were good. Thought the movie was great. So moving, funny etc.

Just watched on DirecTV.

I'll watch it again.

You're a strange dude...

How much longer was left in the film?

why? because a movie started off strong, but quickly faded? maybe 45m left. i have less and less time to waste on a movie i am not enjoying and no desire to see "what happens in the end". why continue and why not put something else in that might be more enjoyable so you can finish a night on a good, happy note...

This movie surprised me as well. Did not expect to like it based on the "meh" trailer. The Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay was well earned. Love the punk rock theme too. I already recommended this to all my friends. 9/10 rating from me.

Agreed. I thought the writing was really strong. So many good lines in this one.

No. I'm not saying it's particularly strange that you can go from enjoying a movie to not over the course of it. That happens all the time. I just find it a bit strange that you came on here while watching the movie and said how great it was and even calling for Oscar recognition without seeing the whole thing. There were 45 minutes of a 2 hour movie left... So its like you based your initial judgement and post off of what 30-45 minutes? And then changed your mind with in like 15 minutes? Maybe you were no longer interested or invested because you were posting on the forum instead of paying attention to the film.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago. I really liked and it was too bad it didn't get more attention during awards season.
