Re: The Fifth Element (1997, D & Co-Writer: Luc Besson)

I saw this in a theater back in 1997 but haven't seen it since. It was on cable the other night and I skipped past it. Had this thread appeared a few days earlier, I would probably have stuck with it to see how it holds up 19 years later.

In terms of Besson, I'm a much bigger fan of LUCY.

I've also seen DISTRICT B13 more than once.

I've also had a soft spot for this film. Saw it in a crappy theater with bad sound in NJ when it came out and still loved it. I've been using the movie as one of my check dissc for my home theater since 2000.

District B13 is co-written and produced by Besson but it's not directed by him. It's an awesome flick, though. The sequel rocks, too.

I hate this movie and always have. Chris Tucker ruins it (and Gary Oldman doesn't help).

I was at my in-laws over Thanksgiving and this was on cable so I decided to give it another shot. I couldn't make it past 20 minutes. Starting with the STUPID giant robot things that can barely move starts it on a terrible note and it never recovers.

I do think that about 99.9% of all the females in the film are smoking hot. As if Besson just said fuck it, no ugly or regular chick allowed.

Ruby Rhod was Jar Jar before we knew Jar Jar was coming.

Ruby Rhod never bothered me anywhere near as bad as Jar Jar, and frankly if Jar Jar spent his screen time eating out stewardesses I may have liked him more.

Due to the eccentric nature of the character I've never heard a name tossed out there that I thought could work, but Prince? I think that could have worked.

And Prince taking issue with feminine looking clothes?

I never could get into this flick. I hate the look and tone from the first time I saw it. I don't know if I ever watched it again. I love sci-fi, Bruce Willis flicks and other Besson movies, so you'd think it'd be an automatic homerun for me.

The first one is the best one. The second one? It's not as good but it's sure as fuck more entertaining than the previous one.

Re: The Fifth Element (1997, D & Co-Writer: Luc Besson)

Didn't they say that originally Ruby's costumes were dresses or mostly dresses? I could have sworn I read the Tucker insisted the costumes be changed so he wouldn't have to wear dresses. Maybe Prince didn't like dresses either. Say what you want about Prince's androgynous look...I don't think we've ever seen him in a dress.

Fashion Designer Jean Paul Gaultier did the costumes. That's why they are so amazing.

Yessssss. Seems like every female with lines or screen time longer than 20 sec were Fashion Models. Probably due to Jean Paul's Gaultier's presence

Gary Oldman was the best thing about the movie. I liked the movie when I saw it, but it still had a lot wrong with it. Other than Tucker a lot of the humor felt childish or simply failed with me. I have never liked Milla as well and the fact she can't act doesn't help.

I've never been a Milla fan either. She's the worst part of the Resident Evil movies (and that's saying something).

Re: The Fifth Element (1997, D & Co-Writer: Luc Besson)

Aside from Tucker being at his most annoying (playing a character written to be as annoying as humanly possible), the movie is just too camp for me. When I first heard that Bruce Willis was going to be in a Sci-Fi action movie I was excited.

Then I saw the movie and found out that it was modern, over the top camp. Talk about disappointment. There is very little in the movie that I like, but a lot that I can't stand.

I give The Fifth Element a D.

Nope, it was directly inspired by his own art in the Valerian and Laureline comic Circles of Power (which may have been ripped off from Blade Runner ) by the artist Jean-Claude Mezieres while doing production design for Fifth Element.

And Blade Runner was inspired by Mobius and Metal Hurlant. Besson went to the same well that the BR crew went to a decade before.

The Fifth Element looks great, but it fails to be in the same league as Besson's best films. I think the singular problem with the film is that it is meant to be very funny and tongue in cheek and yet no comic actors were hired to be in the movie. Take Brion James. He has a major part and is expected to do physical and verbal comedy. I don't think the guy was ever in a comedy. He only plays tough guys. He just can't do it. Milla is basicly a fashion model taking a turn at acting. Oldman isn't really known for comedy. Willis is known for the fantastic comedy Hudson Hawk. Chris Tucker is/was a comic actor...but that didn't go so well. Who's idea was it to put Luke Perry in this thing?
