Arrival (Villeneuve, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Re: Arrival (Villeneuve, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread
I am surprised I didn't comment on this when we saw it back on opening weekend. For me the theatrical experience did nothing to enhance what to me was one of the sloooooowwwwwest movies I have seen in the theater this year. I am quite frankly shocked at how many here seemed to enjoy it. I will chalk this one up as not for me and not badmouth it further.

I don't get most of the slow complaints on this one actually. It felt like it progressed at a pretty good clip from beginning to end but it's likely one of those things that either registers for you or doesn't.
Then again, I remember being bored out of my mind the first couple of times I tried to watch 28 Days Later, but then for some reason it just clicked and I enjoyed it a great deal one night when it was on HBO.

I saw it a couple of weeks after it had been in theaters, so I had heard the complaints about it being slow and prepared myself for it. I thought it moved at a fine pace, and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm stunned Adams didn't get an Oscar nom for it.

I also don't really understand the "slow" complaints for this one, not entirely sure how it could move a whole lot faster. I think some people just expect dialog to be throwaway lines between characters before impressing you with something visual.

I think it's because the ads were somewhat misleading. Those who weren't in the know were expecting something more along the lines of Independence Day.

That's fair, not every one is aware of the diretors filmography.

I enjoyed this, but didn't love it. I found Adams to lack any emotion and her dialogue was flat without any emphasis. I thought that the reveal was pretty obvious from around halfway in, but it was still well done.

I thought the reveal was obvious from about 2 minutes in. I was really disappointed in this, just a Nolan-esque script directed by a great director that almost elevates the movie beyond it's silly plotting.

Sorry guys...I gave this 3 stars because it was well made enough, but all this movie does is borrow ideas and concepts other sci-fi films...I don't think there's an original story point in this whole movie. Given all the people gushing over this thing, I can only come to the conclusion that (a) you are easy manipulated (boy, this film pushes the emotional buttons, but in obvious, annoying ways), (b) you don't see many older films and think this is all "fresh", or (c) both.
Not a horrible movie by any means, but certainly not worthy of all the adoration...it's just "okay." I have no desire to watch it a second time.

I can see why others may not like it, but for me, it's one of the best of the last five years.

Yeah, I can't wait to see this again. Knowing what I know now, it will be fun to see it and see how the events unfold knowing the ending. Do you have bluray? Did you watch the extras?

My 4K UHD just shipped today. Arriving tomorrow. I liked it when I saw it in theaters a few months ago, but I'm looking forward to seeing it in 4K and paying a little more attention to some of the details I may have missed.

I blind bought the blu-ray and enjoyed it well enough. Being a huge fan of both Renner and Adams helped me enjoy the film a bit more than I normally would have (I felt Renner got short changed a bit and would have preferred his character having a bit more impact on his surroundings).
I'm not sure I'd consider this a twist ending, it seemed pretty obvious where they were going from early on in the film. The second the aliens "full circle" style of writing appeared on screen, it removed any doubt that that's the direction the movie would go.
I never found it boring or slow but I can sort of understand people's complaints when a lot of the dialogue/plot revolved around learning a new language and trying to communicate with the aliens.
I felt there was one slight misstep in the movie where Adams entered the alien atmosphere but aside from that one small compliant I really enjoyed the film.
To me Villeneuve is still batting 1000. Though, I'm a bit shaky on Enemy.

I thought it was decent. Liked it, but didn't love it. I was expecting a little more and was a bit disappointed.
Villeneuve is putting out the better mainstream films out there - but I really prefer his earlier output of Canadian films as well as the more recent Enemy.

I like Sicario but I think Enemy might be his best film.
