I thought that Jim Carrey was the de facto Robin Williams replacement.

Who says Genie has to be a guy? Why couldn't Melissa McCarthy or Amy Schumer play the role?

Will Smith, Dumbo ...is that a crack about his ears?

Personally, I think they should try KellyAnne Conway or Sean Spicer as Genie. They have both proven they can strike comedy gold when going off-script.

'Aladdin': Disney Struggles to Find Stars for Its Live-Action Movie

Quote:
The studio and Aladdin director Guy Ritchie launched a global casting call in March to find the stars for the musical based on the hit 1992 animated film about a street kid who teams with a genie to woo the princess Jasmine. Disney, Ritchie and casting director Randi Hiller brought on casting agents around the world, from London to Egypt to Abu Dhabi and India, for what sources say is a massive global search: Around 2,000 actors and actresses have read for the lead roles of Jasmine and Aladdin.

But finding a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing has proven difficult — especially since the studio wants someone of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent (the animated film is set in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Agrabah). The original casting call specified that production was slated to begin by July, but the search has dragged on, with Disney and Ritchie having to go back to the drawing board multiple times. Sources say there have been several rounds of tests in London, with the actors coming in for up to two weeks at a time. “The test process was a mess,” says one agent with a client who tested.

Just cast Dev Patel and the women will come flocking to see it.

Disney has officially found its Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie for the live-action “Aladdin” remake. The three cast members were announced at the D23 Expo on Saturday.

The House of Mouse may have been having problems finding its titular Aladdin for the remake of the 1992 animated classic prior to D23 this weekend, but the same cannot be said for Jasmine and Genie. Naomi Scott has officially been cast as Princess Jasmine, while Will Smith will be taking on the Genie. Newcomer Mena Massoud has also joined the cast as Aladdin.

Guy Ritchie was previously announced as director.

John August, whose credits include “Big Fish,” wrote the new “Aladdin” script. Dan Lin, who produced Ritchie’s two “Sherlock Holmes” movies for Warner Bros., is also producing “Aladdin” through his Lin Pictures company. Jonathan Eirich is exec producing.

The original animated movie was a comic take on the Arabic folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp.

“Aladdin” was the highest-grossing film of the year in 1992, and won Academy Awards for best score and best song for “A Whole New World.”

Smith can be seen next in Netflix’s fantasy actioner “Bright.” He is repped by CAA and Overbrook Entertainment.

I assume that is supposed to say "newcomers" although Naomi Scott was recently in Power Rangers. She was fine in it, seems like she could be a good fit for Jasmine.

I actually like my casting better. At least Kevin Hart has been funny in a movie this century.

Will Smith as the Genie? I just don't see it. I know no one could even come close to Robin Williams, but Smith is the last person I would have picked to play the Genie.

I actually can sort of imagine Smith as The Genie. He wouldn't be my first choice but I think it can work. The Rock would have been a good choice too.

Prosthetics? With all the shapeshifting that the genie does, I would expect him to be a fully CG character, with Smith just doing the voice and maybe some motion capture.

Speaking of mo-cap, I wonder if Andy Serkis was considered.

Re: Disney's Aladdin -- Live Action (D: Ritchie) New, Rumors, Etc.

You guys should check out that featurette on the Aladdin Blu-ray about adapting the Genie to Broadway. They pretty much said they weren't going for Robin Williams since that would be impossible, and went in a totally different direction. He straight up looks like a regular dude.

But since this is a movie, yeah, they can do something much more elaborate. But I'm pretty sure they'll also do their own thing, and maybe adapt extra Broadway elements, just like Beauty and the Beast did, and like The Lion King will probably do.

But now that I think about it, I wonder if this live action version will rip off even more stuff from The Thief of Bagdad.

I figured they'd go the CGI route with Genie, don't have an issue with Smith as the voice.

Indeed. His character was clearly inspired by Williams in Aladdin.

The Rock was the obvious choice for the genie period.
