I don't think they have done one since the Princess and the Frog.
Hand drawn take way too much time and don't make much money if I recall correctly.

And by "live action" you mean completely computer generated. Right Mr. Lucas?

Live-action genies have been done before. THIEF OF BAGDAD (1940):

^That was 1940. You don't honestly believe that in 2017-2018 they won't use CGI for the genie.

Disney is on the hunt for the next Jasmine and Aladdin.

The Guy Ritchie-directed live-action adaptation of the classic animated feature has sent out a casting notice calling for Middle Eastern actors in the 18 to 25 age range to audition for its leads, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Aladdin is set to be a movie-musical (a la the upcoming Beauty and the Beast reimagining), so the notice reads "must be able to sing" and says dancing experience is "a plus." Shooting will take place over an approximate six-month period, from July 2017 to January 2018, in the U.K., with rehearsals beginning in April.

Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin voiced Aladdin and Jasmine in the 1992 animated feature, which follows a street-wise youth who tries to woo a princess and defeat an evil sorcerer after he stumbles upon a magic lamp and is granted three wishes by a genie trapped trapped inside.

Big Fish writer John August penned the screenplay for the feature, which is being produced by Dan Lin via his Lin Pictures banner, with Jonathan Eirich executive producing.

Recently, Disney had a similar casting call for the leads in the live-action Mulan remake, asking that those who audition speak "fluent English and Mandarin Chinese." The casting notice was posted on Twitter earlier on Thursday.

They really want unknowns? This is a publicity stunt.

I say Emma Stone for Jasmine. She pulled it off Asian fairly well in Aloha. I'm sure she can pull off Middle Eastern. Come to think of it, cast her as Mulan as well.

Ritchie will always go back to the well of British gangster films.

Have you seen Aladdin? Both "One Jump Ahead" and "Prince Ali" are full of parts for middle-eastern actors. None of the parts would require big names.

And Jake Gyllenhaal for Aladdin. He knocked it out of the park with Prince of Persia. Hell, he can even use the same clothes.

I find it weird that they would want unknowns for the leads. Since they chose a well known actress for Belle

He hasn't done a gangster film in almost 10 years. Rock N Rolla was his last one. Once he did Sherlock Holmes it was big or semi-large tent-pole films.

How many truly well known middle eastern actors are there?

They're not doing a casting call for extras. Read the flyer again.

Put him back in Pinocchio or whatever the hell it was before - and this. Maybe Mulan as well.

I actually don't immediately hate that idea... But then I think... oh... it'll be typical Smith. But considering he couldn't come to an agreement on pay for Dumbo, we'll see if this actually happens.

To be honest at first the news surprised me a bit but thinking about it I can kind of imagine it. I don't think he or anyone will be able to hold a candle to Williams' performance but I can sort of imagine Smith bringing the flare needed for the Genie while also putting his own twist on the role.

Now that I think about it more... I do think Disney would be willing to pay whatever fee Smith is asking here. In comparison, if he was asking $20mil for Dumbo, there is no way they could really justify that. I would imagine Dumbo will have a smaller budget and would perform somewhere between Pete's Dragon and Cinderella...so lets say $250-300mil worldwide. This will easily perform as well as Beauty & the Beast and make $1 billion.

Yeah I'd buy Smith as the Genie. I'd might prefer the Rock, but he just did a very similar Disney role.

Does Will Smith even still have comedic chops? His last real comedy was 2012's MiB3. Other than Suicide Squad and Focus (both somewhat were comedic) he seems to do a lot of dreary Oscar bait movies these days.
