The Invitation (2015, D: Kusama)

I couldn’t find a thread for this, so ... here we go.

Saw this on Netflix and thought it was a decent little dinner party thriller. I recommend it if you are looking for something suspenseful to spend part of an evening with.

The director, Karyn Kusama, has a few known films under her belt including 2018’s acclaimed The Destroyer with Nicole Kidman. Here she provides a slick little black party dress of a movie ... something simply elegant that draws you in and teases you with what is underneath.

Kind of spoilery (no details, but stil ...):

Spoiler:

It seemed pretty evident from the beginning where this was headed, but the pacing was excruciatingly fun. You thought “yes it is” and then it would drag you back to “no it isn’t”. Then it creeps back to “yes it is” and lulls you back over to “no, no, what is going on?”

Saw this when it came out, and I agree, it’s very well done with a decent twist.

My problem was the lead actor he was just so bland and boring. Took me right out of the movie.

I loved it as well and picked up the blu ray and watched it again with my wife, who also really enjoyed it. Even with the "twist" it was still enjoyable the second time.

I won't disagree ... it didn't pull me out of the movie, but I struggled with "is he a bad actor, or was he good at playing a character who was emotionally conflicted". Then I found out where I knew him from ... Prometheus.

I think he is just a wooden actor. He was the lead in Upgrade as well.

Watched this on Netflix today. Really enjoyed it. I had this confused with Coherence, another mystery dinner party movie (but more of a sci fi nature)
