Re: Disney's The Lion King (D: Jon Favreau)

I've never seen the musical, so I'm not sure how many differences there are between that and the movie. Did they add any songs, characters, or sequences that weren't in the movie? Anything that they could incorporate into the new movie?

Other actors. You know like they do in every movie that gets remade.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that many more people would rather some new films come out than a remake of an old animated film.

Disney’s “Lion King” live-action reboot is getting in formation.

Sources tell Variety that Beyonce is director Jon Favreau’s top choice to voice Nala in the upcoming remake.

Insiders stress that the Grammy winner has not made a decision regarding the film yet, as the star is pregnant with twins. But since it’s a voice-acting role, sources say the studio and director will do whatever it takes to accommodate her schedule. The songstress announced her pregnancy in early February and dropped out as a Coachella headliner by month’s end. Lady Gaga will replace the “Single Ladies” singer at the desert music and arts festival next month.

Donald Glover is on board to voice Simba and James Earl Jones is reprising his role as Simba’s father, Mufasa.

Favreau is directing with Jeff Nathanson writing. The film is being fast-tracked, even as Favreau begins development on his sequel to the recent hit “The Jungle Book.”

“Lion King” was originally released in 1994 and is one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, ultimately hauling $968.5 million worldwide.

The studio’s emphasis on live-action adaptations follows the successes of “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), “Maleficent” (2014), “Cinderella” (2015), and, most recently, “Beauty and the Beast.”

This would mark Beyonce’s first film role since lending her voice to the Fox animated film”Epic.” Her other major movie credits include the 2009 thriller “Obsessed,” 2006 movie musical “Dreamgirls,” and 2002 Mike Myers comedy “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”

John Oliver to Voice Zazu in Live-Action 'Lion King'

Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and Donald Glover are set for the Jon Favreau feature.

John Oliver has joined the cast of Jon Favreau's live-action Lion King movie as Zazu.

Oliver is joining a voice cast that includes Donald Glover (Simba) and James Earl Jones (Mufasa), as well as Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner, who will voice Pumbaa and Timon, respectively.

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for the live-action adaptation, which is being produced by Favreau and Jeffrey Silver.

Rowan Atkinson voiced the uptight hornbill in the original 1996 animated pic, who serves as a feathered political advisor to Simba and Mustafa.

Oliver, who is best known as the host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, has voiced Vanity Smurf in Sony's The Smurfs and Smurfs 2. He is repped by WME and Avalon.

Lion King is set for a July 19, 2019, release date.

Apparently Hugh Jackman is voicing Scar.

EDIT: debunked.

Chiwetel Ejiofor in Talks to Voice Scar in Live-Action 'Lion King'

Donald Glover is voicing Simba in director Jon Favreau's re-imagining of the animated classic.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was nominated for an Oscar for starring in 12 Years a Slave, is in talks to voice the role of Scar, the traitorous villain in Disney’s live-action re-imagining of its classic, The Lion King, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Jon Favreau, who directed the live-action remake of The Jungle Book, is sitting behind the camera for King, which already boasts a stellar voice cast of Donald Glover as Simba, the young lion who would be king and James Earl Jones as his father, Mufasa (Jones voiced the character in the 1994 original).

Also lending their pipes to the pride are Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Oliver.

Jeremy Irons voiced Scar, who betrays his brother Mufasa in order to steal the animal kingdom’s crown, in the animated version.

The new movie is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

Ejiofor was last ween on screen playing the troubled sorcerer Mordo in Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

If there were two characters that are absolutely defined by their voices/performance, it would be Mufasa/JEJ and Scar/Irons. Every other character I'm fine with a new take on, but those two? Iconic. Those are impossible paws to fill.

I don't think they should remake a classic, that's just wrong.

Agreed. Why get Jones and not bother with Irons? Was he even asked?

Maybe they want an "ethnically consistent" cast, with all of the lion characters voiced by black actors.

While i'm not so attached to either voice that I don't think they can be replaced, but it's weird to me to keep James Earl Jones. I'd rather they just change everyone rather then keep links to the cartoon.

It would be like keeping Kevin Conroy as Batman but ditching Mark Hamil for Joker

Alfre Woodard Joins Disney's 'Lion King' (Exclusive)

Donald Glover will voice Simba, and Mufasa will be played by James Earl Jones.
The pride's all here!

Alfre Woodard is the latest to join Jon Favreau's Lion King, voicing Sarabi, Simba's mom. Woodard joins Donald Glover as Simba and James Earl Jones, who will be reprising his role as Mufasa. Madge Sinclair voiced Sarabi in the original 1994 Disney animation.

Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Oliver will also voice parts in the feature, which recently added Chiwetel Ejiofor to its roster to play the villain, Scar.

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for Disney, with Favreau and Jeffrey Silver producing. Lion King is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

Woodard was most recently seen in the Sundance stand-out Burning Sands and Netflix's Marvel series Luke Cage. Up next for the Oscar nominee is the indie Saint Judy, where she stars opposite Common and Michelle Monaghan, and Clark Johnson's Juanita, where she plays the title role.

She is repped by ICM, Circle of Confusion and Gochman.
