Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

I like the general premise, but the trailers haven't done much for me, seemingly giving away far too much in the process.

I'll probably check it out next week if I can catch a matinee or something.

All I know is that I want to get me a robotic half-Michael Sheen to tend my bar.
Though hopefully less robotic than he was in Masters of Sex Season 3.

Hmm, disappointed that the reviews are not good so far. I may still catch a matinee during the holiday break though.

The weird thing is that all the current marketing is hiding the Big Twist, but when the movie was first announced, they openly and plainly revealed what the Big Twist was. Maybe they realized they should play up the "young lovers in space" thing instead of...

Spoiler:
Chris Pratt as a creepy and downright disturbing stalker with mental issues.

This is getting just terrible reviews. Sounds like a fundamentally flawed creepy premise, and while I've enjoyed Pratt in stuff, I don't really think he has much range - he seems to play variations on the same character and is not really cut out for serious roles.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

I find it refreshing that a "professional" reviewer went easy on this movie and actually gave it a Recommended. I enjoyed his review, particularly his summary:

Quote:
Viewers will inevitably make comparisons to Titanic, and there is no question that Cameron's epic is the better film. It's likely that many of my fellow critics will be excessively harsh on this sci-fi romance. As a film that isn't trying to get in on the Best Picture race at the Oscars, this is a fun time at the cinema. There isn't a single dull moment to be found in its two-hour running time, even as we reach its troublesome third act. Jim proves to be a captivating lead, especially when combined with Pratt's impressive performance. Those who want to take a break from the serious Academy Awards season will find joy in this one, even despite all of its issues. Passengers might not have you calling "shotgun," but it's worth hopping on board for. Recommended.

I'll be looking forward to seeing this, perhaps even adding it my collection, it appeals to the scifi geek in me.

Saw a preview tonight, what a snore fest. Took forever to get going sorta like the first few episodes of Last Man on Earth. And when it did get going. it went nowhere.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

I can't believe the studio didn't interfere to change 1 major early plot point that IMO, derailed the movie - it added nothing to the flick and while they tried to play up the morality of it for about ONE MINUTE, I couldn't shake it from my mind and was fairly checked out the rest of the movie... I have no problem with "Titanic" in space and setting up some grand sweeping romance but this one was more icky than I'd have hoped.

lol, you watched both Assassin's Creed and Passengers yesterday, even with the knowledge that they were going to be bad? You need to find a better use for your free time.

So that's where Stephanie Zacharek is nowadays. She used to be one of the Village Voice's best reviewers, but then she disappeared (like most good writers who pass through the Voice). Sadly, nobody reads Time Magazine anymore either.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

I caught a Dolby Cinema showing at AMC tonight.

Not sure exactly what Dolby Cinema entails, but the movie looked stunning visually on the big screen.

If you're looking for an intense and gritty science fiction thriller, this isn't it. It really plays up the loneliness angle along with the romance angle later on.

It takes awhile to get going, especially in the 1st hour watching Pratt waking up and then being bored out of his skull and trying to find things to do. They do play up the mortality angle as well. He also comes across as kind of creepy, but I was never bored with him on screen by himself. Once JLaw gets into the mix, then I thought the story picked up and became a little more compelling. I thought she and Pratt had decent chemistry and worked as a romantic couple. Even though I'm not a huge fan of JLaw, I thought she looked stunning. IMO, I thought she really looked beautiful is several scenes.

I liked it, but a hardcore sci-fi nut might not. I was entertained for the most part and thought it was stunning visually, but it did take awhile to really get going. To make a long story short, it's for the most part a space soap opera like Titanic in space as mentioned. I think this will look great on a big 4K TV or 1080p TV.

Not sure what this plot hole that mdc3000 is referencing.

There's a non-speaking cameo from a fairly well known actor. I'm not sure why he took the part. He was on screen for less than 1 minute.

Saw this yesterday. Visually the film is gorgeous with set pieces to match but I felt the film bumbled quite a bit after the first act.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

I really enjoyed it. I don't bother with reviews so I went in with no preconceived notions. It's very slick and gorgeous and moves at a decent pace but something felt missing. Pratt was decent and Lawrence was solid, but I can't help but think the film would have been elevated by different leads. Fishburne's brief appearance/role was fantastic. It was enjoyable but I was hoping it would continue the 3 year run of great sci-fi flicks this time of year (Gravity, Interstellar, Martian), but it fell short.

Walking out though, I can't help but think after decades and decades of sci-fi flicks, how have we never seen a swimming pool in space? (or have I just missed one?) That scene was amazing and should have shown less of in the trailer.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

The only other notable sci-fi property that regularly depicted luxury space travel that I can think of is Star Trek: TNG, and they didn't need a pool as they had the holodecks. Most ship-based tv/film sci-fi tends to be either militaristic or "truckers in space".

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

It wouldn't have to be luxury though. Swimming laps to stay fit, rehabilitation for injuries, etc.

It was a very unique idea and the entire sequence was the highlight of the film for me.

Re: Passengers (2016, D: Morten Tyldum) S: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

The gf dragged me to this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. It got pretty sappy towards the end, and
Spoiler:
Jim surviving the blast of fire
was completely absurd. But the technology was pretty cool, and I was never bored. Pratt and Lawrence had good chemistry.

Yeah that was the only part I really had issues with.

Yeah, I'm off this week and the wife isn't so I did a double feature with Arrival and Passengers yesterday. The former just blows the latter out of the water. Had I seen this on its own and if it had a less traditionally 'happy' ending, I might've liked it more, but it fell pretty flat for me overall.
