Focus Features has given an awards-season opening date of Nov. 18 to Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams.
Focus will expand “Animals” on Nov. 23 and go wide on Dec. 9. It bought worldwide rights last year at the Cannes Film Festival in a deal costing more than $20 million.
Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Ellie Bamber and Laura Linney also star in the drama. The film is an adaptation of Austin Wright’s 1993 novel “Tony And Susan,” described as a two-part story within a story.
The first part follows a woman named Susan who receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband — a man whom she left 20 years earlier — asking for her opinion of his writing. The second revolves around the manuscript, titled “Nocturnal Animals,” about a man whose family vacation turns violent.
“Nocturnal Animals” marks Ford’s return to directing, seven years after the release of “A Single Man,” which Ford self-financed. TWC distributed “A Single Man,” which grossed $24 million worldwide. Colin Firth received a best actor Oscar nomination for his role in the film as a depressed gay British professor living in Los Angeles in 1962.

6 reviews, 1 negative, most compliment Ford but have some minor issues with the material. Generally though, very very good reviews.

Everyone always looks so good in Tom Ford movies. Must be his fashion designer aesthetic.

I got to see this yesterday. It's very good and quite twisty with the movie set in three different timelines, one of which is the world of the novel that Amy Adams' character reads. Pretty thought-provoking and the present-day plotline is exceptionally stunning in its costumes and production design, as seen in the photo above.

Well, I'm glad that after being the only highlight in BvS, Adams has two real movies coming out this year.

Comes out in limited release this week. Certified fresh on RT (76%). If there's a showing in my area I'll try to catch it.

Whew.. rough one to sit thru.. I think Jake gets an Oscar nom. Sat in the Q&A with Ford after the screening. Not sure how he saw the ending as good for Susan. The beginning was, well... let's just say GiantRobo would be spanking it. Not familiar with the novel this is based on (Tony and Susan).
I thought it was genius that they cast Isla Fisher seeing that the Susan is casting people she knows as characters in the manuscript (except herself), but they play on the fact that Isla and Amy look alike.

Opening scene...
Certainly will stand out over time. I did like the movie quite a bit, despite it not being what I expected based on the trailer. I thought Jake's character was going to be some sort of stalker.
Michael Shannon stood out the most with his performance, and I didn't even realize the main bad guy was Aaron Taylor-Johnson until about halfway through the movie. He really disappeared into that role.
Fucked up story, but again, I liked it. May pick this up on BD one day.

Saw this one yesterday and it was great in a messed up sort of way. the more I think about it, the more I like it. Let's hope Oscar remembers Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal & especially Michael Shannon for their strong performances. One of the best of the year.

Shannon was definitely the highlight of this. That guy is just fucking killer in everything. He needs to be recognized with a major win finally.

Then in this interview on RogerEbert.com, he doubled down. “This country’s filled with ignorant jackasses,” he said. “The big red dildo running through the middle of our country needs to be annexed to be its own country of moronic a–holes. You can call it the United States of Moronic F—ing A–holes.”

Just caught this one. After the opening credits , the movie was pretty dang interesting. Not sure what the ending meant, but I guess it's up to interpretation. This was definitely an art house movie, as regular audiences would despise it and probably run out before it actually starts .
While all of the performances were top notch, I'm surprised there hasn't been much mention of Aaron Taylor Johnson. I thought he was just as good as Shannon and Gyllenhall. Didn't catch that Isla Fisher was playing Adams' in the book sequences. I didn't think it looked 100% like Adams , but the night lighting made it hard to tell the difference. Guess that was the point.
Oscar potential? Maybe Supporting Actor for either Johnson or Shannon and adapted screenplay. Possibly Costume Design as well , just because of Ford's background.

Saw it today too.
Thought it was fantastic aside from a few minor things. Amy Adams was perfect here, as was most of the cast. I'm not sure if I'd ever watch it again, though. Heavy (no pun intended) content... That whole West Texas night time driving sequence was very intense.

I wonder if there will be a way to view the opening credits sequence with the titles playing against a plain black or red screen? That sequence really was not relevant to the plot in any way and the art sequence could have been established with just the quick scene they did.
