So, will Affleck get the Nate Parker treatment?

This movie is way too far up its own ass. Solid, but nothing amazing. Ordinary People 2.0.

Yeah, I don't get that either. How was this remotely reminiscent of Ordinary People?

Some people like to rag on it, but Ordinary People is a solid film.

Yes, "Ordinary People" is a decent film. But for the love of God, winning Best Picture over "Raging Bull", "The Elephant Man", "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Tess"? All four of those were far superior and far more deserving.

Very good film. Heartbreaking. Casey Affleck was very good. I don't think it was a dead lock "give him the Oscar, forget even watching the other nominees" type performance, but he should definitely be recognized with nominations from every award ceremony.
Glad I saw it, but doubt I ever watch it again. The story is just depressing.

Impeccably made with stellar performances, terrific cinematography and a very genuine feel
However it is just not entertaining and there is really no arc. Affleck's performance is excellent but I never saw any change in him though maybe that was the point.
Really disappointed by both of the leading Oscar contenders this and La La Land.
Hell or High Water and Zooptopia are both much better than these movies in my view.
At least 10 people in my viewing of this left and never came back./

I didn't get this one. The performances were great, with the exception of Williams who I did not think was good at all. I just didn't think the story went anywhere. 2 hours and then nothing. I didn't need a happy ending but I was looking for some kind of ending. Not a movie I think I'll ever watch again.

Finally saw this. I really liked it. Yes, it is a depressing story, but it so well-written, well-acted etc., that it didn't matter.
And I don't know what people expected out of an ending.

Really good performances, and really well written, and I was OK with the ending. I don't have much desire to see it again, though.

I've seen this twice now and it's just masterful. Can't wait till Casey wins.

Denzel is winning the Oscar because of the sexual harassment allegations. After the Globes I still thought Casey would take the Oscar too, but Denzel's SAG win said a lot I think.

Re: Manchester By The Sea (2016, Lonergan) S: C. Affleck, Williams, Chandler, Hedges,
I enjoyed this one but I'm giving more credit to the screenwriter and director than Affleck or anyone else. The moments of subtlety and those unseen/unheard events only referenced to, that, to me, is masterful filmmaking.
Affleck did a great job playing the part of a walking dead man, shuffling through life until he eventually meets his end. But that's it. There is virtually no growth. He never really tries to force himself outside the boundaries of grief. He is presented as a man who has endured a terrible tragedy and he remains that man at the end. There is a brief glimmer of hope in that he's getting a place with an extra room for his nephew to visit but ultimately he hasn't changed and likely will slip right back into his routine of extreme self-loathing. His bursts of violence (the two bar fights) actually felt out of character because, being depressed, I feel like little to nothing can truly affect him.
Williams brought the most to her role, going from stern housewife to grieving mother to repentant new mom. That scene with her and Affleck near the end was tense and said so much with such little information.
The editing could have been a bit more judicious, too. There were too many scenes of characters just standing there, staring at each other, fumbling for words. I think Affleck's grief and his inability to converse with most people was made clear enough. Staying with some of those moments slowed the film. There were also just some flat-out weird dialogue exchanges that didn't work at all, like Greg and his wife yelling back and forth about getting Lee a plate of food. Lots of stammering here and there, too. It sounded to me like someone trying to write overlapping dialogue but it never felt natural.
Still, this did capture depression perfectly. I like that there was no big resolution or breakthrough moments because that isn't always how life works, but if I'm watching a movie about characters I would like to see some growth over the course of 2+ hours.

I gotta disagree. Denzel has his 2, more chance for Davis from that one, though the SAG award, I thought was a surprise.

I was hoping if they decided to go away from Casey they'd give one to Viggo for Captain Fantastic. I think that'd be a cool moment and Viggo gave a great performance.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Affleck wins or loses the Oscar. He was the clear front runner, but his off-putting campaigning has brought him down. I would put him and Denzel as co-favourites right now.
