This looks really good. Maybe I can catch it at TIFF in a couple of weeks.

Does Canada use a different rating system? Because I was looking through the films playing at TIFF, and this is one of them. Shows a PG rating on their site.

G, PG, 14A, 18A, R, and A
(14A = Under 14? You need an adult. 18A = Under 18? You need an adult.)
Which is pretty much equal to G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 and Porn.
Canada is a little looser on their ratings than us yanks. ie - Interstellar is PG-13 in the US, it's PG up there. The Nice Guys is R in the US, it's 14A in Canada. Sausage Party is 14A in parts of Canada as well (18A in other parts).

Instead of spending hours in the GB thread repeatedly saying you weren't gonna see it, you could've spent watching a really good movie. If you read the comments for Sicario, you's know how good it is.

If you're worried about Arrival being too tame, I wouldn't worry too much. Virtually all PG-13 films in the US get a PG rating in Canada. Most R-rated movies are 14A. Very few get the 18A or Canadian R ratings.

A nice interview with Villeneuve regarding Arrival...and some of Blade Runner:

I got to see this today. Despite a basically similar premise to the Independence Day franchise, it is nothing like those movies. I'd actually call it a mix between Contact, Interstellar, with a dash of Gravity thrown in for good measure but is even more philosophical than all three of them. Amy Adams is very good in the role of the expert linguist who has to try to communicate with the aliens and figure out what they want. My personal dislike of Jeremy Renner prevented me from liking him though. He has the stereotypical and traditionally female role as the sounding board to the main character.
It will be very interesting to see how Paramount markets this and how the general public reacts. There are virtually no action scenes, but enough gee whiz visuals to fill a trailer. There are a ton of dialogue scenes where Adams and Renner discuss events in hushed voices in dimly lit rooms though.
How the movie portrays the Chinese government/military is also quite interesting. Spoiler:
And for those wondering what the aliens look like:

I loved this movie. It has great production design, cinematography and a beautiful score. It is poignant and emotional in ways that I wasn't expecting. Amy Adams gives a great, understated performance that should garner some serious awards attention. Renner and the rest of the supporting cast are fine but this is the Amy Adams show. Yes, there is a lot of exposition but it's handled really well and even a few 'stupid' moments get a pass because it's so well done. Not a fast paced movie by any means but the deliberate pace works well to help you absorb everything. Villeneuve's best film in my opinion. It's also the kind of movie you will want to see again. In my top 5 of 2016 so far.

I recently read the short story this is based on. It was bery good, but also very different from what I was expecting. I hope this follows a similar plot.

Just picked up some of the other movies from this director based on the reviews I've seen. I have however seen "Enemy", and did not really care for it. We'll see...

Wasn't interested in this until I heard it was based on Ted Chiang's short story "The Story of Your Life."

Was super disappointed in this. I love slow grinds and sci-fi but couldn't get in to this. Maybe I'm just not hip enough at 44 to enjoy these type of movies anymore.
