I'd totally go but my theater doesn't take part in these Fathom Events. I'll buy the Blu-ray for sure though.

Re: Batman: The Killing Joke

This will be better than any of the current live action films. It's got the involvement of Bruce Timm who gave us a lot of the great DCAU stuff, it's based on a classic story, and it stars two of the most iconic representations of Batman and The Joker in Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

It's also one of the top ten Batman stories. 2nd in most lists behind The Long Halloween.

I checked the fandango link, and this is playing in my neighborhood!

Probably won't go though because of schedule.

My daughter would want to see this, but the theater two blocks from her apt. is already sold out.

There's one in the Bronx, but she won't come up to the Bronx anymore.

I think it's pretty accepted the top 4 in some order are The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, Year One, and Arkham Asylum.

Re: Batman: The Killing Joke

The graphic novel has become a little overrated by this point. I think it's actually one of Alan Moore's lesser DC stories and put the nail in the coffin of the Silver Age Batman. What it did was crystallize Joker as Batman's primary nemesis.

Re: Batman: The Killing Joke

I don't really think it's overrated. It holds up pretty well in my opinion as one of the quintessential Batman stories and took the Batman/Joker relationship to a whole new level. You want to talk overrated see Frank Miller and The Dark Knight Returns.

I'm interested for the story, but the art style of this movie looks like shit compared to the comic.

I think a lot of people started turning on it over the Barbara Gordon thing. I remember in the late 80s and early 90s it was highly regarded, but from the late 90s on, it seems like a lot of people (including Alan Moore himself) were shitting on it.

Moore shitted on it cuz people took it and made it a jerk off session when Moore just made it to make it essentially. Which weirded him out. But that's just Moore.

I was one of those eyes were bugging out when it was first published.
One of my favorite illustrators + Batman + Joker+ no holds barred, "adult" storytelling. I dutifully bought, read, and bagged my beautifully glossy, perfect bound copy.

Over the years though, as more an more dreary, angry, mean-spirited content became de rigueur for this stuff, it lost a lot of luster to me. Now I just kind of hate it out right. I really don't get the appeal. It demystifies what has just always been the characters primary antagonist to what practical benefit beyond reveling in cruelty towards other supporting characters? To make him more sympathetic?
I just don't get the enduring appeal of this...or maybe I just bemoan it's enduring appeal as it's a monument to all that I dislike about modern 'hero' comics.

Re: Batman: The Killing Joke

I just finished watching it and it was pretty damn good. I have to go back and re-read the comic but the meat and potatoes are there. The sex scene those fucking mouth breathers at comic-con bitching and moaning about it was anything but gratuitous. It fit in terms of context and it was not crass or in bad taste.

It is dark as hell and that ending was tense as fuck. Stay for the mid-credits scene.

Re: Batman: The Killing Joke

Saw it tonight. The voice acting was superb, but with the cast that was to be expected. I really do wish they had used the animation style they had in the original animated series. This style looked gritty and cheap, maybe that was intentional. It's a pretty faithful adaptation, once it actually gets to the Killing Joke story. It's essentially two movies . Half a Batgirl story, and half Killing Joke. Does it work? In a way it does. The filmmakers obviously wanted to give development to Barbara Gordon who is pretty much just tossed into the GN as a random victim. Only avid Batman readers would know the significance of her fate, as she is never mentioned a Batgirl in the comic. I only knew because I had been watching the old TV show at the time I read the GN and knew from that source.
However...I doubt there's a damn person watching this thing who doesn't know that Batgirl=Barbara Gordon(or hasn't read the GN several times) , so it's pretty unnecessary .

NOTE : while this occurred before Death in the Family in the comic storyline, this version definitely suggested it was afterward. Kind of interesting IMO .

Another note: it was cool seeing this with a full house that was totally into the experience. I might look into to doing more Fathom events in the future if this is what they're like. I hear Riff Trax live is pretty good.

Every time Blu blames the mouthbreathers it means there's probably a valid complaint.

Not in this case. Most of the time I'm just fucking around when I say that, because that term cracks me up. Hey, those kids in Stanger Things used. it, too!
