IMO it's Fincher's masterpiece. The opening scene with Donovan’s "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is chilling.

This could be really good.

Edit: Whoops, my mistake, thought this was a Marvel branded porno.

re: The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018, D: Alvarez) S: Foy

At long last, Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist will be back on screen: Sony will release The Girl in the Spider’s Web on Oct. 5, 2018.

Production on Spider’s Web — which Sony Pictures confirms will be directed by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) — will begin in September. There will be, according to Sony, an “entirely new cast,” and a “global search” for a new Salander. In David Fincher’s 2011 The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara played the autistic hacker and Daniel Craig played Blomkvist, the investigative journalist.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Alvarez wrote: “I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity. Sony has become family to me, and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth.”

Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, said in a statement: “In all of contemporary literature, Lisbeth Salander is completely sui generis — probably one of the greatest female literary characters of all time, in my view. Modern punk defiance personified, she is unforgettable in every incarnation, truly one of the most compelling characters we’ve seen in recent years.”

Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo was meant to be the first American film adapted from Stieg Larsson’s Swedish Millennium trilogy, which, in addition to Dragon Tattoo includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest — all of which were international bestsellers, and were adapted into Swedish films starring Noomi Rapace as Salander.

Larsson, a leftwing journalist, had planned for the series to be 10 books. But he died at age 50 in 2004; the novels were published after his death. So as is sometimes the case with hugely successful novels after the author dies, Larsson’s Swedish publisher hired another writer to continue the franchise: David Lagercrantz’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web was published in Sept. 2015. It became a bestseller and was a chance for Sony to start the movie franchise over. Soon after the book was released, it was reported that Sony would hire Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Taboo) to adapt the screenplay. Knight, Alvarez, and Jay Basu will share credit on the finished screenplay.

Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo did well at the box office, especially for a movie with a hard-R rating due to graphic violence (a brutal rape). It grossed $230 million worldwide on a $90 million production budget. Mara was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. But Sony wanted to reduce the cost of producing the franchise, which would have been unlikely with Fincher, Craig, and Mara.

On top of that, Larsson’s other novels proved much harder to adapt; Steve Zaillian, who wrote the Dragon Tattoo screenplay, tried with The Girl Who Played With Fire — and then there were reports of rewrites. As opposed to the relatively straightforward mystery of Dragon Tattoo, both Played With Fire and Kicked the Hornets’ Nest are sprawling conspiracies with Salander at their center. They tell the story of a spy and sex trafficking ring, multiple murders, a secret shadow government, and the plight of print journalism. (Also: IKEA furniture.) Sony has retained the rights to the books, however, as well as all future ones in the series.

The plot of the novel The Girl in the Spider’s Web follows Salander’s ambitious hacking doings, which put her in the crosshairs of the NSA; Blomkvist, meanwhile, is feeling stagnant after his magazine, Millennium, has exposed the Salander-related scandal perpetrated by the government. It’s not long before the two of them embark on solving a twisty new mystery together.

The announcement for the production start date and release date for Spider’s Web was made Monday at the London Book Fair at a toast for the fifth book in the series, also written by Lagercrantz.

Mara is too busy or something? They should keep her. Oh well. At least the film can be expected to be violent.

I'd rather see Alvarez doing something original, since Don't Breathe was a pretty good thriller, and I just don't see audiences gravitating toward this new iteration. Hell, Fincher's film barely made a rumble at the box office; I doubt this one will fare much better.

Honestly at this point they'd be better off starting over than trying to do a sequel years after the first film without the original cast or director. This film is probably destined to fail and we'll never see another version.

Not sure if it's the best idea to open opposite Aquaman.

I'm actually very excited about this. I loved both the Swedish version AND Fincher's!

The original Dragon Tattoo trilogy is on Netflix, for those that might want to check it out.

I don't think anyone ever thought to worry about that till Mamoa came to be the Atlantean King.

So weird seeing people think Aquaman is badass cuz of Mamoa.

Not sure if I mis-read your post, but Sony just announced that release date knowing Aquaman was opening that date. Looking at the calendar, they might be better off opening against Mulan a few weeks later.

Also, Mamoa is a bad ass thus making Aquaman a bad ass.

Re-casting this will kill it, no matter who they get to replace Mara and Craig. They might as well remake Tattoo while they're at it.

Wasn't the general consensus that the book sucked? Nobody I know who read it liked it was well as the first three books in the series.

re: The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018, D: Alvarez) S: Foy

According to insiders, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, who costarred in 2008’s “The Other Boleyn Girl,” are among the actresses in the mix to play Lisbeth Salander as Alvarez begins meeting with talent. Johansson vied for the role that eventually went to Rooney Mara in the first film. However, that was due, in part, to director David Fincher’s involvement, so it’s unclear if the interest level is still as high.

Oh, no no no no no. I love both Portman and Johansson. But both are completely wrong for this part. Also, arent' they too old to be playing Salander!?

I like that the "worldwide search" has apparently encompassed all of Hollywood first and only.

yes, i loved Fincher and Swedish version of the original. i would be down for this, but no Mara or Craig? no. i liked them. ScarJo and Portman are good, but not for Lisbeth. maybe Vikander or Ruby Rose could do it...

You know, back when The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo came out I would have thought a trilogy directed by Fincher would have been awesome but I also wouldn't have wanted Fincher to be bogged down with those movies and not be able to focus on other projects. Now 6 years later I look at Fincher's filmography since then and see nothing worthwhile and I wish he had made the trilogy back then.

Or just let it die. The first one and the Swedish one were overblown mysteries you could see the conclusion of coming a mile away. The only thing they had going for it was the "character of Lisbeth". And even that is a hodgepodge of other damaged characters.

According to Justin Kroll, the role of Lisbeth was offered to Alicia Vikaner a while back but she passed; Fede is meeting with talent now for part.

Yup. That was posted back in 2015 when this project was first announced. I don't think she'd be right for it. This Indiewire article has some good suggestions/picks: http://www.indiewire.com/2017/03/cas...tz-1201793415/

I really don't get why they won't have Mara back if she is willing.

It was only last week announced this would open Oct 5 but with Aquaman moving, Sony has slotted Venom so now this has moved to October 19. Gotta love the game of musical chairs with these studios.
