Didn't notice how small the budget was for Get Out. Nice return.

Blumhouse has been "killing it" this year. Get Out had a $4.5m budget and a $157m WW return (so far), additionally Split had a $9m budget and has grossed $265m worldwide. Crazy.

Good for them. They are hit or miss but, with that much money coming in, they can pump out more product.

Logan crossed the $200m mark this weekend, it is now the 5th highest grossing X-men property domestically, this list includes Deadpool. It is #3 Worldwide (also including Deadpool) with $566m so far, it is still behind Days of Future Past ($747m worldwide), and Deadpool ($783m worldwide).

Kong: Skull Island seems to be kind of low on the domestic front, but has grossed $392.7m worldwide (it's roughly in line with Mad Max: Fury Road and Pacific Rim). Unlike those two though, Kong is still very much active.

It looks like Passengers was put into more dollar theaters this past weekend, it may actually hit $100m afterall.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Sony is doing their best getting Passengers above the $100M mark.

Also funny that Slamma Jamma made more per screen than CHiPs

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Surprised to see Boss Baby do so well. I thought the trailers were terrible and expected it to open closer to Storks or the last Ice Age in terms of box office (both opened around $21 million). This opened higher than Trolls, which had more publicity, more screens, and better reviews.

Shia LaBeouf Thriller ‘Man Down’ Sells Just One Ticket at U.K. Box Office

Ouch.

“Man Down,” a war thriller with Shia LaBeouf, grossed just £7 ($8.70) when it premiered in a single U.K. theater over the weekend, according to ComScore. That’s the equivalent of selling a single ticket, given that the U.K. Cinema Association puts the average movie admission cost in the country at £7.21.

“Poor Shia,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “That opening could be in the Guinness World Records or something.”

The film played in one location, Reel Cinema in Burnley. It was simultaneously released digitally on demand, making the theatrical release something of an afterthought. It launches on DVD and Blu-ray next month, according to the Guardian.

After scoring in big studio blockbusters such as “Transformers” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” LaBeouf has focused on more indie projects with mixed success. He earned strong reviews for last year’s “American Honey,” but other work, such as “The Company You Keep” and “Charlie Countryman” have barely registered with critics or audiences. Instead, the media has focused on LaBeouf’s off-screen behavior, such several alcohol-related arrests (he got sober), and performance art that recently saw the actor participate in an art installation protesting Donald Trump’s presidency.

“Man Down” reunited LaBeouf with Dito Montiel. The two previously worked together on 2006’s “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.” The film screened at the Venice and Toronto film festivals to negative reviews. It did better in the United States than it did across the pond, grossing $454,490.

Other stars in indie projects have seen similarly dismal results. Emma Watson got a wave of negative publicity last summer when her direct-to-video film “The Colony” only opened to £47 in the U.K., while Richard Gere’s “The Benefactor” kicked off to a dismal £25 in spring of 2016.

All the attention about the small grosses may have a side benefit. It could raise attention for the low-profile project.

“There could be a silver lining to those seven pounds,” said Dergarabedian.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

http://deadline.com/2017/04/most-pro...ey-1202060846/

Deadline put out this very interesting list of 2016 films based on total profitability, not gross revenues. They sliced and diced the hidden numbers as best they could for the estimates.

The list's ranking looks vastly different than the year's highest grossers. The Secret Life of Pets came out as the year's most profitable movie at nearly $375 million. Up next was Fox's Deadpool. A lot of the superhero films don't perform as well under this metric considering their total grosses. The studios just don't take home as much profit from foreign box office totals as you would expect.

1. The Secret Life Of Pets (Uni) – $374.65M
2. Deadpool (Fox) – $322.24M
3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dis) – $319.60M
4. Finding Dory (Dis) – $296.60M
5. Zootopia (Dis) – $294.90M
6. The Jungle Book (Dis) – $258.15M
7. Sing (Uni) – $194.25M
8. Captain America: Civil War (Dis) – $193.40M
9. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (WB) – $164.70M
10. Suicide Squad (WB) – $158.45M

Well when movies cost $300M to make, add in another $300M on marketing, these numbers do make sense.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Range from Deadline, Hollywood Reporter and Variety is $100-110M for Fate of the Furious weekend. Still quite early and could go up or down from there. Have to wonder it will do with it being Easter weekend and NBA Playoffs.

Easter may slow it a bit but NBA won't matter at all IMHO. It is looking to break international records though with $530 mill+

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

IDK, appears like we underestimated the impact of Furious 7 being Paul Walker's last movie. Seems like this, and any further entries, will fall back to earth (i.e. $80-95M). Still, internationally the franchise will be a beast.

Here are the multipliers for the others that opened in April:
#5 - 2.43x
#7 - 2.39x
#4 - 2.19x

So it's probably looking at around $225-240M domestic.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

From Box Office Guru, on the audience breakdown for FATE OF THE FURIOUS:

Studio data showed that the crowd was 58% male, 59% non-white, and split evenly between males and females.
Is that an error or am I missing something? How can it be 58% male and also split evenly between males and females?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Sounds like a mistake, Box Office Mojo mentions a 58% male 42% female split properly. Although I have to laugh at the use of "non-white" as a descriptor.
