Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Apparently Get Out actually managed $33.4m, not $30.5m
I'd also like to add that the #1 grossing movie of 2017 so far (worldwide) is xXx 3 with $330m. Followed by Fifty Shades Darker.
Your Name is technically a 2016 release but since it doesn't get a US release until April, it counts in the 2017 "Worldwide" chart, so it's now 3rd.

Logan pulled a very strong $9.5m on Thursday night. By comparison, Deadpool pulled $12.4m en route to a $132m weekend.
Tracking has this opening between $65m (Fox estimates) and $85m (Rival estimates).
Tracking has this opening between $65m (Fox estimates) and $85m (Rival estimates).
Heading into this weekend, Fox was tracking Logan to a $65M opening, however, rivals had it higher between $70M-$75M. There’s also a group of aggressive trackers out there who firmly believe Logan is destined to make $80M-plus. That’s not a crazy projection based on Wolverine’s money last night, coupled with the fact that the James Mangold-directed movie counts a 93% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes — the best badge a superhero movie can have in this day and age, guaranteeing long legs. By the way, it’s also the best RT rating for a Wolverine movie, which has seen its critical grades improve from the first 2009 movie (38% rotten) to the 2013 sequel (69% fresh). Could Logan post the biggest opening in the Wolverine trilogy, beating the first installment’s $85M opening? It’s not unreasonable.

Logan looks to have topped $88.3m for the weekend, well above Fox's $65m and rivals $70 - $75m early estimates

Weekend Actuals - 3/3 - 3/5/2017 - Great opening for Logan, utterly amazing hold for Get Out -- I really hope Peele got some points on the backend
Logan, Get Out, John Wick 2 and *sigh* 50 Shades Darker are showing a strong argument for R movies.

Kong: Skull Island started with Thursday previews of $3.7m.
Projections now have Kong: Skull Island heading for $53m this weekend.
Logan is looking at $35M (-60%, but I think it'll do better than this)
Get Out is looking at $20M (-29%, but I think it'll do better than this)

holy fuck for Get Out!! Budget under $5 mil and now made over $110 mil. amazing!!
Kong took in about $61 mil. on its budget, it will have to do well overseas. which it probably will...

However, it beat the standard weekend model for estimates in the US which bodes well for legs.

I wonder if Passengers will inch past the $100m mark. It is currently the second highest movie ever not to gross $100m (after Gnomeo and Juliet).
There are very few films that made between 97 and 100 million because when movies run out of steam as they head into that range, studios will often give them a push to make it past the century mark. Passengers has another $650k to go after making $105k this weekend.

Narrowed down to roughly $173m for the weekend, and before the people that didn't care for it chime in (lol at the thought of anyone chiming in in this thread), remember Alice in Wonderland was seemingly universally panned here, and still made $1b worldwide with comparatively small drops weekend-to-weekend.

Just remember, Batman v Superman got horrible reviews and yet still made $166M in its opening weekend (in fact it'll be one year next weekend).

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
This morning I went to buy tickets for this to take my 2 daughters tomorrow. It's a reserved seating theater, and it's playing nearly every half hour (or sooner) starting from 9:30AM, and it's nearly sold out at every show. I had to go down to 5:30PM before I could find the 3 together that I needed in anywhere but the front two rows.
I came out of Belko Experiment at 11PM last night, and there were still little girls everywhere when I left.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
yeah, but i don't think people gravitate to live-action remakes of Disney classics as much as the already huge fan base for BvS and SS. yes, they've done well, but this one looked the dullest of them all...

Girls who saw and loved Beauty and the Beast in theaters as children are just the right age to bring their own daughters to this now, and that hits them right in the feels.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
So we're only 10 weeks into 2017 and already 7 films released this year have crossed the $100 million mark: Split, Lego Batman, Fifty Shades Darker, Get Out, Logan, Kong, and Beauty and the Beast.
And while Hidden Figures was technically a 2016 release, it was only playing in 25 theaters for the last week of the year and opened wide in January so could be considered a 2017 release for all intents and purposes, making it 8 films so far.
I'm not sure if this is a record or not, but I can't remember another year where so many movies grossed this much so early.

^ To be fair the only real surprises there were Split, Get Out and Hidden Figures. But yeah, that is a lot of movies to cross the $100m mark, last year we had 3 at this time (Deadpool, Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda 3)

Adjusted for ticket inflation, the animated version made $392M (with theatrical re-release) domestically. Can't do an adjustment for overseas but back in 1991, it made $206M OS, $425M unadjusted worldwide. So I'm guessing it would be ~$600M worldwide adjusted.

Thursday Night #s:
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - $3.6M
Life - $800k
CHiPs - $500k
I'm guessing Power Rangers is looking between $36-42M, Life $11-13M, CHiPs $6-8M
