People are going to want to get their minds off of things this weekend. Wouldn't be surprised if Strange way over performers because of it.

Agreed, it should do well this and next weekend. I actually think it has a solid shot of cracking $92m+ this weekend.

I think the budget was modest on Arrival. $50 mil I think. That's not a bad haul...

To note, Paramount only owns US rights to Arrival, they paid $20m for it at Cannes 2 years ago. Sony owns most other territories.

Fantastic Beasts did well but there's speculation if it did well enough to spawn it into a full blown franchise. Edge of Seventeen didn't do so hot, nor did Bleed for This (Hands of Stone opened slightly lower, Boxing isn't a hot topic right now).

Moana didn't hit the high mark they were initially expecting after the strong Tuesday night showings, but it still pulled $81m over 5 days which is quite good. A slim drop for Fantastic Beasts and Doctor Strange, a fantastic drop for Arrival, and a terrible open for Allied.

And apparently the less said about Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk the better. Ouch. Almost as bad with Bleed for This, but not quite.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Passengers is a bit of a flop as expected after the reviews started flowing in, but nothing entirely damaging to the stars -- it's certainly hanging in there. Assassin's Creed on the otherhand appears destined for a quicker death and may or may not be salvaged by overseas grosses (not yet reported). La La Land and Fences are both doing extremely well. Live by Night does not look so promising.

Rogue One is up to $775m worldwide, Sing is at $277m WW, Passengers is at $122m WW, Assassin's Creed is at $86m WW, and La La Land is at $64m ww

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I saw an article in Variety that said there is an overwhelming amount of releases for this time of the year and most moviegoers simply don't know what to see.

Some of these releases are getting ignored/lost in the shuffle.

This week alone there are 6 major releases.
