Definitely this one.

Also:
Movies aimed at the teen/tween demographic, such as the stuff put out by whatever the current Disney stars are.

Comedies and Horror are two genres that take a heck of a good review for me to check out. I like both genres, but there is so much more crap than good out there.

I think he means indie movies that jump up and down and scream: "Look at how goddamned indie we are! We are so indie. Bow before our indie-ness!"

And with that I agree.

Okay. Definitely not how I'd classify the Coen Bros., but whatever.

The Coen's don't scream "Indie" at all. Hell, even Wes Anderson's stuff, while certainly hipsterish, isn't really Indie either.

If you want some indie hipster douchy-ness that screams looks at me, look no further than Noah Baumbach.

Yeah, not much of a fan of his stuff, but oh boy, do critics like to diddle their dicks over his movies. Indie cred!

Okay just because you don't like them doesn't mean every superhero film is strictly for kids. A lot of them (particularly the Nolan Batman films and MCU films) have great stories and action and are fun to watch. Also I get tired of people acting like there are really that many of them. Three to four a year isn't really that much at all compared to other films. They just are marketed more because they cost a lot to produce.

Period films set in either the Victorian or Elizabthan eras.

Ya beat me to it. Any movies about British royalty (The King's Speech, et al) just disinterest me completely.

I'll also throw in those "lowest common denominator" movies like Paul Blart Mall Cop, anything with Adam Sandler, etc.

And I'm not a fan of superhero movies either. I hated both The Avengers (and I'm a Joss Whedon fan!) and Guardians of the Galaxy, two very well-received movies, so it's clear this genre is not for me. I do like the Nolan Batmans, and the first Raimi Spiderman, so there's always exceptions to the rule.

Adam Sandler productions do not even qualify as "films," or "movies," or "entertainment." They should not be discussed here.

Edit: I am coining a new term for this "genre." I am calling these "shootself" comedies.

Are there many of these that are reviewed highly though?

No, but box office numbers tell us they're well liked in our brain dead society.

The IFC Center in New York always runs Greta Gerwig trailers and I want to run screaming out of the theater. I have never seen a Greta Gerwig movie, nor do I ever hope to, unless she does an action movie like Scarlett Johansson (LUCY) or Angelina Jolie (SALT), something I doubt will ever happen unless she breaks up with Baumbach and starts dating Luc Besson.

This is my list too. I will probably never see Mel Gibson's The Torture of the Christ.

watching 'Francis Ha' was just painful ... painful to me.

~

Paul Thomas Anderson's movies are becoming so self righteous.

Random screen grabs from my Flickr account:

As I was reading through this thread and all the people listing anime, I was wondering when Ash was going to chime in and say "anything non-anime" or something like that...

Not even Ash can defend this one though: live action features based on anime/manga. The Japanese just don't have the budget/actors to do them justice most of the time, and the domestic versions try to change the source too much. Dragonball Evolutions was on TV the other day and I caught a snippet of it... ugh.

As a comic book nerd and anime fan, plus having kids, it seems like all I watch is superhero and animated stuff...

But otherwise I'll watch nearly anything, besides, as others have stated, torture-horror and stoner comedies. I've also had to shy away from movies where they use swear words as punchlines in every single line of dialogue.

Forgot that the thread title does say popular as well as being well received. Although I don't really agree with the brain dead part.

I've expressed this before on this forum, but I've never really embraced Japanese cultural sensibilities. I've tried, and I can appreciate some of it from a distance, but in general it's not something I seek out.
I really like the concept of anime, and I do like Japanese culture, but I still haven't found a series that I can watch more than a couple episodes of. Even Cowboy Bebop didn't grab me the first time I tried it, though I want to try it again. I do like Ghibli films and some others like Akira.

I saw it because I wanted to understand the phenomenon, but yeah, one of my least enjoyable viewing experiences ever.

I'll nominate a sub-genre...Marvel solo flicks. Team movies like Avengers, Guardians & Big Hero 6 are all A+ flicks. All the individual flicks Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk etc. range from poor to mediocre. Marvel is too busy creaming themselves about tying movies together to actually make a great stand-alone film.

But if they were done to your liking, the solo films would appeal to you, right?
