Unsure why they brought in Jack Thorne over Trevorrow only to have Abrams take his own stab at it. I'm assume it's a rework instead of a full rewrite? I guess we'll see.

A Star Wars movie every Christmas is awesome. You can also pretty much bet on a great return because of Christmas break and other studios keeping their tent pole films far away.

love the date change.
and I'm fine with JJ taking over.
I do find this whole thing somewhat fascinating and hard to believe that there was not a concrete 3 movie story arc in place here... that JJ just left some dangling strings for the next director to play with and so on. Hope it works out.

Well, that's a nice safe choice to get the ship back on course.
I'm chuckling at the fact that JJ was just sitting around at home with really nothing to do, when Kathy Kennedy calls him to start directing a mega budget movie with no notice, he's like "sure thing!".

Excited that JJ is back. Big fan of his filmmaking style. I thought they should have kept him for all three films.

I'd bet they do have those details, story structure and how they get to those plot points is probably the issue.

From what they're saying about Snoke, is we will know as much about him as The Emperor in ROTJ. Nobody knew the Emperors backstory in 1983, we didn't even know if he was a force user.

Was pulling for Rian, but JJ was prob my 2nd choice...combined with the expected release date move...I'm happy with the news. And to be fair, we don't know what TLJ will be like...it might be too much of a departure...but we'll see.
As enjoyable as TFA is to watch, it's hard not to notice some of the lazy beats...and I accept that as something they felt compelled to do as a way of relaunching the SW brand (and the most important things were done right - the new characters and actors)....just hoping that the 3rd film doesn't rely on those same things.

Women have no understanding in defining masculine culture and identity, you can't speak on the behalf of us, just like so called male feminists can't speak for women. Patty Jenkins is right in calling out James Cameron for his Wonder Woman comments, and JJ Abrams is nothing more than a traitor to our gender. You failed us when you killed the most lengedary Alpha male in movie history and gave his ship, a Man's ship to a girl.

I expect JJ did TFA like Lucas did ANH. He wrote an overall outline so he could do his movie and then handed the reigns off to Disney/Johnson to fill in for the second story. Episode IX will probably end up in pretty much the exact place his outline planned for it to end up although with additional filling in by Johnson.

Keep in mind that the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye was commissioned by Lucas to also serve as a possible movie sequel storyline. It's really nothing like how the later movies turned out.

That's not how Lucas did Star Wars. He wrote that originally as just a single movie (which is why the "Episode IV" title didn't appear until re-releases). Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were largely made up on the fly, although during preproduction on ESB there was some thinking of plot points past it.
Keep in mind that the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye was commissioned by Lucas to also serve as a possible movie sequel storyline. It's really nothing like how the later movies turned out.

edit: although like with most things with Lucas the story changes depending on the day. It's all true from a certain point of view.

As for Vader surviving, Lucas was leaving the door open for a possible sequel, but that doesn't mean he knew the significance of Vader. Keep in mind that in the first film, Vader seems much more like Grand Moff Tarkin's lapdog than The Emperor's apprentice.
I recommend reading The Secret History of Star Wars to get an idea of the real creative process behind the films, and not Lucas's own aggrandizing.

I guess I'm the only one not super thrilled with JJ being back. I thought TFA was ok, not great and a lot of that had to do with his safe approach to everything. At least Gareth Edwards took a chance and made a darker film -- granted character development lacked. JJ regurgitated A New Hope... I hope he doesn't give us a 2019 version of Jedi.
