re: Star Wars Anthology: Untitled Han Solo Film (2018, D: Miller & Lord)
According to the very well connected Making Star Wars, Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s developing Han Solo spinoff movie starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia Clarke is now eyeballing a December 13, 2018 release date, which would push the movie back a few months from its currently planned slot of May 25, 2018. And the move makes a lot of sense.
With “Avengers: Infinity War” dropping on May 4, 2018 releasing a “Star Wars” film three weeks later doesn’t make much sense, and would potentially cut into the long tail play of the Marvel movie. Meanwhile, the only picture scheduled on the December 13, 2018 weekend is the Peter Jackson produced “Mortal Engines” which lands the next day. (It should be noted, December 13th is a Thursday; presumably the sources Making Star Wars are using are counting the traditional Thursday evening showings as the “opening day”).
Again, this is not official, but given Disney’s current success in the December corridor, it stands to reason that making “Star Wars” a part of everyone’s holiday tradition is just good business.

Well, if the Han Solo movie gets pushed back, that means Episode IX will get pushed back as well. I agree releasing a movie every Christmas is a better idea - although I expect there are some execs at Disney and Lucasfilm who want to try summer for at least one of these films to see if it's better or worse for the bottom line.

Will it? Isn't it set for 2019? It doesn't seem like this woul affect a possible May 2019, or more likely Dec. 2019 release.

Episode IX is currently set for May 23 2019, but I don't think that pushing back the Han Solo film automatically means that IX gets pushed back as well. The same crews are not working on both films. If it does get pushed back, I think it would be because of issues with delivering IX on time that don't have anything to do with the Solo film, or simply because they prefer to continue with the Christmas release schedule.

But is there a Marvel film scheduled for May/June 2019? If so I could see the same thing happening. It would be kind of nice to see Star Wars in the summer again.

I think IX is going to get pushed back regardless as they retool the film after Carrie's death. I think they should stick to December releases until 2019. After IX, they will probably then look and see how they want to release the next slate of films.

They should keep coming out in December. It's already becoming a family tradition to see Star Wars at Christmas. Doesn't seem to be hurting them financially.

Yeah I don't know why they'd move now. Rogue One has already pulled $439m in the US which is just outside of the Top 10 grossing domestic movies. Force Awakens is #1 domestic.
