Dwayne Johnson, ‘San Andreas’ Producer to Reteam on ‘Rampage’ for New Line
With “San Andreas” having passed the $400 million worldwide box office milestone this past weekend, it was only a matter of time before the team behind it found another project to tackle.
Dwayne Johnson is set to star and Beau Flynn is on board to produce the action pic “Rampage,” based on the 1980s Midway video game.
Ryan Engle is penning the script, with plot details being kept under wraps. In the video game, players were tasked with stopping a giant gorilla, a lizard and a wolf as they wreak havoc across America.
Flynn will produce via his FlynnPictureCo. banner. John Rickard will also produce via his Rickard Pictures. Richard Brener, Michael Disco and Sam Brown will oversee for New Line.
Production is likely to start sometime in the summer of 2016 as Johnson’s schedule is filled until the next spring. Johnson is currently filming the action comedy “Central Intelligence” alongside Kevin Hart; New Line will bow that film next summer.
Though HBO has not yet ordered a renewal, Johnson is also keeping his winter schedule open to film the second season of “Ballers.” Given the show’s great start on Sunday (2.2 million viewers), that pickup looks likely.
Johnson is also planning to film the eighth installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise next spring, reprising his role of Hobbs.
Johnson is repped by WME, the Garcia Companies and Gang Tyre. Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

Very cool to see everyone's reaction to this big announcement! We're excited too. The scale and fun of this movie is insanely dope and massive - Think the meaner, nastier versions of KING KONG, GODZILLA and a mutated gigantic WEREWOLF wreaking havoc all across America. This was my ALL TIME favorite video game as a kid which is why I'm so excited to make this movie for y'all. EPIC destruction? Yes. EPIC entertainment? Yes. How will I stop these massive monsters? I have no f*cking clue... 💪🏾. Pre-production starts now.. #RAMPAGE #ArcadeClassic #ImStillABigKid

Jesus. Which version did I see of that game? Because I don't remember it looking like that.

I remember playing this arcade game when I was a kid. I remember saying to myself "Gee, this should be made into a movie." Glad to know they're making my childhood dreams come true.

That's the original arcade. It even says so in the title of the video...
It is being played on MAME which is an arcade emulator for PC.
What version did you play? The Atari 2600 or NES version?
This is the Atari 2600 version:

I played the NES version for HOURS. This was before saved games existed so we just had to pause it when we took a break. After playing what felt like 1000+ levels, our reward? "Congratulations". That was fucking it!

Spoiler:
Most NES games ended like that. Stories and therefore endings didn't matter back then.
The best ending to an NES game was probably the ending of Bad Dudes. I loved that game as a kid. It was so bad (when bad was a synonym for good... the Power Glove... it's so bad...)

This was one of my favorite games as a kid. I think I still have the NES cartridge.
They've been trying to get this made into a movie for a very long time. Hope it turns out okay. It shouldn't be about trying to take out the monsters, it should be from the perspective of the three scientists. They need to make sure people feel for the humans behind the monsters, instead of something like a Godzilla movie.
I'm sure they remade this game with better graphics too. Which versions are everyone else familiar with?
Edit: yep, just Googled it, there were a few remakes with updated graphics.

At least you didn't get this for winning:

I interpreted his question as which particular version he remembered, since he didn't remember it looking like the vid in the original post. Now, since Snake is 28, the most likely candidate is the N64 one. But yeah, reading his post again, he might also be just asking WTF he's looking at.

FUCK. I LOVED that game. Really good. A bit cheap w/ some of the monsters you fight but so much Kaiju love in there. I always wanted a sequel to it.

David Jaffe did that one. You could tell. It was fun game, I only had my sister for it but it was still cool. 4 players possible. That would have been awesome for me.

I think this could be great if they did it as a medieval fantasy take on The Raid (or Dredd). Just establish the characters and a basic story and let them fight monsters through the dungeons until they reach the final boss (who existed in the NES version but maybe not the arcade). I think they would screw it up if they tried to make it into an epic LotR type sprawling adventure because then it's just another generic fantasy thing.

Rampage was a fun game, and the one I usually fired up first whenever getting those arcade ports for the Playstations.
As always, I'll watch anything with Johnson. It gets tough, since he's in almost everything action these days, but damn if he doesn't seem to have fun.

Man, I spent a lot of quarters/tokens on Rampage in the arcade at the local Putt-Putt.
Now where are my Altered Beast and Golden Axe movies?

Altered Beast. I haven't played that since like 1995. Apparently it wasn't as good as I remembered it from what the online people say. Granted... I was a kid. Kids to like shit that isn't all that great.
