While I happen to think Pratt was a large part of the enthusiasm for this, I did forget that the original is now 22 yrs old, and nostalgia cycles are generally a twenty year thing (which is one reason there was as much enthusiasm for Burton's Batman as there was despite not being a real crowd pleaser of a movie. The other big reason being the presence of "everybody loves" Jack Nicholson).

Even if this opening weekend was packed with kids, I still think Pratt swayed the fence sitters and motivated kids to treat the film as a big deal- something that didn't happen when William Macey was headlining an installment.

Maybe it's just a question of it being a major tent pole movie that doesn't revolve around comic book characters.
As if dinosaurs running around a park eating people is something out of Noel Coward. This is comic book all the way. just without the costumes.

Pitch Perfect 2 was the other winner from Jurassic World's release (due to "You guys go see that, we'll go see PP2 again") so a double-win for Universal this weekend.

Get ready for an onslaught of dinosaur and other assorted monster movies, folks. You know how Hollywood loves a to latch onto a success.

Hey, maybe someone will give us a SERIOUS 'Land of the Lost' movie now.

General vague interest in a summer tentpole gets you $50-100M, depending on the property. The biggest opening weekend of all time has a lot more positive factors at play.

This movie has nothing to do with a comic book franchise. Give me a break. Same could be said for Universal doing well with Furious Seven.

Summer blockbusters have been around a long time, and comic book movies are just another variety of them. JW fits right in with classic blockbusters over the decades, just like its first movie.

If he had said "superhero" movies instead of comic book movies, I would have agreed with him.
"Comic book" is a little broader term that is usually used disparagingly to describe most heavy on visuals/light in the head summer blockbusters.

JW looks fun, but I have no problem classifying it, and Mad Max for that matter, as comic book type movies.

And it's not just the fact they are action movies. The Train is an action movie too, but would anyone say that was a comic book movie?

Eh, I get what Paul_SD is saying, but I'm with that group that thinks JW doesn't come off as comic book at all, it's a bit more traditional monster movie cinema. Mad Max:FR though I agree with entirely.

This opening for Jurassic World shows me that moviegoers are content with mediocrity these days. I have one friend who saw it this weekend and told me, "Of course I didn't expect a great movie, but it was entertaining enough."

Hollywood can keep throwing shit out there and people will see it.

Again though, with opening weekend how many really knew if it was mediocre or great? All most of them had to judge it off was a trailer, and it's an appealing premise.

Though yes, as long as Hollywood makes broadly appealing movies, they will likely make money.

Of course, next weekend when this grosses more than it was expected to open with initially, then you'll have your answer (I suspect there will be a lot of repeat viewings from the younger ones.)

Opening weekend is never about quality, especially when it comes to summer movies like these. Marketing and maybe a bit of nostalgia helped it open so well.

Could the new Star Wars break this record? Hard to say with a December opening.

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

Jurassic World made $25.3 million yesterday, which is now the highest grossing non-holiday Monday (un-adjusted). The previous record was The Dark Knight at $24.4 mil. The Avengers holds 4-10 day records. JW should likely beat all of those.

SW, or any December release, has 0% chance of getting the biggest opening weekend of all time. Christmas movies are all about the marathon, not the sprint.

Agreed, though I'm sure it will have the biggest weekend for December. It will open bigger than $84 or whatever it was that The Hobbit had earned.

The next movie with any chance at the record is Batman v. Superman, though it's not at a time of year when records are usually set. WB probably lost a couple hundred million in total gross by pushing it to March.

I think having the clip of the Mosasaurus eating the great white shark in the trailer was a brilliant marketing move. That image alone had enough "Wow!" factor that it was probably responsible for a large percentage of the movie's box office receipts exceeding estimates.

i think a lot of schools having been let out gave JW that extra little nudge over AoU.

nonetheless, that's a monstrous opening.

This used to be exciting, now there's a new record weekend every other summer.
