Woody Harrelson to Play Villain in New 'Planet of the Apes' Movie (Exclusive)

Plot details are being kept secret, but the actor will play a character called the Colonel.

Woody Harrelson has nabbed one of the leading human roles in Fox’s latest Planet of the Apes installment.

Matt Reeves, who directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned as helmer for the new project, which is titled War for the Planet of the Apes. Mark Bomback also is back as screenwriter and Chernin Entertainment as the producer. Dylan Clark is also producing.

It is unclear who is returning to the new movie, which will continue the story of Caesar, the evolved ape who is brought to life via motion capture by Andy Serkis.

Plot details are being kept secret, but Harrelson will play a character called the Colonel.

It was recently reported that Gabriel Chavarria would play one of the new characters, but insiders say his part is small.

Harrelson is currently shooting LBJ, starring as President Lyndon B. Johnson, and will be back on the big screen in the final Hunger Games movie, which hits theaters on Nov. 20.

The actor is undergoing a resurgence thanks to the critical acclaim for his work on the first season of HBO’s True Detective.

Harrelson is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham.

Woody's an awesome actor...I might wind up rooting for him, even if he is the villain.

He's always interesting. If not surprising if he's actually paid to really act out a character. Jesus, he's such a waste in those Hunger Game flicks. Such an easy job.

Steve Zahn Cast in Latest 'Planet of the Apes'

Steve Zahn has been cast as a new ape in Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes.

Matt Reeves, who directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned as helmer for the threequel, set to hit theaters on July 14, 2017. Mark Bomback is back as screenwriter, with Chernin Entertainment producing.

Zahn's performance will be realized using motion capture technology, which brought to life Andy Serkis' Ceasar in the two earlier installment of the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Woody Harrelson has also been cast in the new Apes installment.

Zahn is known for his roles in That Thing You Do, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Dallas Buyers Club.

He can next be seen acting alongside Danny Trejo and Adam Sandler in The Ridiculous 6, which is currently in post-production. He can also be heard in Pixar's upcoming The Good Dinosaur, lending his voice to the prehistoric project.

The actor is repped by UTA, Principal Entertainment and Frank Stewart.

Zahn is a solid actor. Not many recognize his serious roles because he's done so many comedies. I just wonder what ape he will play. Maybe he'll take on the Cornelius role?

You should watch Perfect Getaway - he's pretty cool in that, too.

Apparently they're doing an open casting call for an ape actor. Video yourself acting like and ape, send it to them, and you get to do the whole motion capture thing as an ape extra.

Some articles say that the build up to reveal Caeser is snow... couldn't it also be ash?

Either way, I am totally stoked for this to come out!

I thought Rise was alright, Caesar was great though. It just was very generic as fuck aside from Serkis.

LOVED Dawn aside from the humans for the most part. They need to get the humans to be great characters too.

Love the mood and feel of that teaser. Either ash or snow works, could be teasing a nuclear winter.

Forgot about Harrelson being in this. I really really hope he isn't a generic Military type that hates to hate cuz of his boy or whoever that was in the photo. That aspect worries me.. otherwise... I'm so goddamn fucking game for this. LOVED Dawn even w/ the weak humans.

Interesting of Maurice to have that little girl. I like that. The humanity of some of the Apes.

Serkis is fucking amazing as Caesar. Can't wait to see more of him. That motherfucker has the whole playing Ape thing down.

I have to see the second one again. I remember liking it, but I never wanted to see it again. The first I saw several times.

Looks pretty good. Scope doesn't seem quite as grand as I would have expected though. Seems like all the battle scenes are from the same forest area from the last film.
