I went to the very first IMAX 3D showing of the day and it was pretty packed, which is unusual here. There was applause when it was over, so people were happy.

For sure, as some theaters are probably sacrificing screens to show the fight, and charge much more for tickets.

Heh, no theaters here are doing that since it'd be roughly $10,000 for 1 screen. Too much of a risk.

HBO/Showtime/MGM Resorts are asking for a $5K minimum if your establishment wants to show the fight. The title fight won't start until 8PM PST/11PM EST minimum and practically every theater that's playing the film has around-the-clock showings. If someone wanted to see AOU and see the fight today, its more than doable.

Either way, right now this weekend looks anywhere in the ballpark between $185M - $215M based upon history.

If the film follows the same trajectory as the first film:
Day 1: $84M / Day 2: $72M / Day 3: $59M; Total: $215M

If the film follows the same trajectory as say Furious 7:
Day 1: $84M / Day 2: $59M / Day 3: $42M; Total: $185M

I know there's less theaters overall, it just really seemed like far more screens per theater then before. Are there screen count numbers out there?

Probably a lot of excuses can be made if the opening is less then $200 million though... the dip in ratings showed it wasn't as amazing as the first which might have cooled the hype a little, plus it's been a pretty big weekend in sports with not only the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight, but the NFL Draft, Kentucky Derby and NBA playoffs as well. The drop in interest in 3D that was mentioned earlier probably accounts for a big chunk too.

Only 191 million? Sad to see a Marvel movie flop. I can only assume phase 3 will be massively reworked. Maybe a bit more dark and grittiness to match DC.

Oh no! Not just under $200m!

I think their Sunday estimates are a little low.

‘Avengers’ Sequel Picks Up Where First Film’s Profits Left Off

Spoiler:
LOS ANGELES—Promising that the sequel would continue to follow the impressive feats of an incredible group of revenue streams, executives at Marvel Studios confirmed Friday that Avengers: Age Of Ultron picks up right where the first film’s profits left off. “The last Avengers movie triumphantly concluded with $1.5 billion at the international box office, and Age Of Ultron will jump right back in and continue earning from there,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who added that long-time investors would be able to return to collecting dividends from the superhero film franchise without skipping a beat. “I can’t tell you exactly how this one turns out, but I think it’s safe to say that people will be blown away by this movie’s spectacular 10-figure revenue. Of course, this film is going to leave the door wide open for possible future Avengers movie profits, and we might even explore the option of earning income from each individual character.” Feige added that careful observers would notice how ticket sale proceeds from the Avengers, Captain America, and Iron Man films were all connected.

The sad thing is it'll be seen internally as a disappointment, at least for OW.

Final tally guesses? I'm thinking $435mm.

What's really sad is that both this and Star Wars are being released by the Mouse, and no matter which movie does better, he gets all of the profits. No real worrying to be done for the studio.

I will say I am amused at how drastically they changed the day to day tallies for this movie. Most day by day estimates get lowered by about $4 to $5 million, this one had a day that was lowered by $10 million and a weekend with estimates lowered by about $15 million. They must be a bit over zealous in their initial reports.

I think it'll be adjusted up, they don't have good projections for when another event takes away from standard gross.

However, the Domestic total will likely be under $500m which is what I expected a while back.

The initial reports are done by speculative companies, the weekend estimates (today) are done by Disney and other studios, finals are what really count.

I'm in the theater right now about a half hour before the movie starts and it's about 2/3 full and all the good seats are taken.

I'm sure the fight cut into some of the opening, but if that's a factor they could also make the argument that this past Saturday was allegedly the "Best Sports Day Ever" with the NFL Draft, NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, PGA stuff, the KY Derby and the fight on top of that. Granted, a lot of people who are into that are likely not going out of their way to see AoU in the first place, but a factor is a factor. Hell, say it was Free Comic Book day and all of your core audience was out shopping.

But there is always a comic movie opening the weekend of free comic book day.

I wonder if Marvel fatigue is starting to set in. Ant-Man will be a real test now.

People said the same about Guardians of the Galaxy as well. It actually seems that the more fresh/new material is going over better than the outings with established characters.

I think super hero fatigue is definitely settling in, AND Avengers 2 is just not a good movie. It will drop pretty hard I think.

Yeah but Guardians looked fun to me in the trailers, Ant-man just looks thoroughly 2nd rate.

Disney has to be disappointed it didn't cross $200 million. They wanted the box office record and it's not apparent any of their movies until Avengers 3 has a chance at breaking it. For what it's worth, I didn't think much of the Ultron trailers.

Again, the Mayweather/Pacqiao fight had to have had an effect.

Not a $30mm effect, though.
