Lionsgate is planning a sequel to Keanu Reeves’ action-thriller “John Wick.”
CEO Jon Feltheimer made the announcement Friday during a conference call with analysts to discuss the studio’s earnings for the third quarter ended Dec. 31.
“We see ‘John Wick’ as a multiple-title action franchise,” Feltheimer said.
The movie grossed $43 million domestically and $35 million internationally following its October launch. Feltheimer noted that the title had performed well in ancillary markets.
“John Wick,” directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, also starred Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe. In the action pic, Reeves plays a retired hitman seeking vengeance for the killing of his puppy, a gift from his late wife.
The film was produced by Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road Pictures, Leitch, Eva Longoria and Michael Witherill. Stahelski and Leitch previously worked with Reeves as stunt doubles on The Matrix trilogy.
Movies.com first reported that Stahelski and Leitch were developing a sequel.

We’re happy to report that if you were completely blown away by the action and thrills in John Wick, the directors tell us they’re in the works on another one. [Update: And now Lionsgate confirms that franchise plans are definitely underway.]
During our chat with Chad Stahelski and David Leitch for “Director’s Notebook,” the stuntmen turned directors revealed that they definitely want to give the fans what they want and are currently working on a sequel to their hit debut, which not only proved that Keanu Reeves is still a viable action star but introduced us to some spectacular new action sequences like “gun fu” and “car fu.”
“We’re in development right now,” Stahelski told us.
They didn’t go into any specifics on story or if Reeves would return, though Stahelski did hint, “If we could work with Keanu Reeves for 10 movies you’d have a really cool career.” The two admitted that pressure of a sequel isn’t coming up with more action, but keeping the character relatable.
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”
“You gotta go on a journey with the guy and have to like the guy,” Leitch added.
Stahelski and Leitch are hot commodities in the action world at the moment as news broke last week that they are in early talks to helm Cowboy Ninja Viking, starring Chris Pratt.

Lionsgate has officially confirmed today that it plans to produce a sequel to 2014’s critically-acclaimed revenge thriller John Wick. Keanu Reeves will return as Wick along with directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and screenwriter, Derek Kolstad. John Wick 2 will be released through Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment and will be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk, who produced the first film.
“With such tremendous fan and critical support for ‘John Wick,’ we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell,” says Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.”
Produced on a modest $20 million budget, John Wick earned more than $78 million at the worldwide box office.
“In the follow up to last year’s adrenaline-fueled revenge and redemption thriller,” reads the sequel’s temporarily minimal plot synopsis, “legendary hit man John Wick is back.”
Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan at Lionsgate will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. Lionsgate International will be selling the picture internationally at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

I dunno. I love John Wick but feel that, unless it's a prequel, his story is over. Sure, Marcus did insist that John was officially back (after John himself exclaimed the same a bit earlier in the movie) but I'd rather see a movie revolving around the Continental hotel. If they want Keanu to star, either make John part of the hotel staff (enabling him to jump through different story vignettes featuring different assassins and their respective plotlines) or create a brand new unrelated movie featuring the same cast and crew in brand new roles (that way we can get Adrianne Palicki, Willem Dafoe, and Michael Nyqvist back).

Yeah. I dug him getting it all over with in the end of the movie. A sequel seems like he's kind of pushing off the peace that he got when he quit w/ his wife.

I'll remain cautiously optimistic. My fear is that Lionsgate will bank on fans wanting more of the same, and so they'll basically make the same movie again.

I'd rather have a Continental movie as well. But now that John Wick is "back" it could still be fun.

He did get another dog at the end of the movie... and we know what happens when you mess with his dog.

Yeah. I'm interested in how he got out cuz whatever that was exactly... it sounded pretty damn good of a set up to what John Wick uh.... John Wick 1 was.

The one thing I don't want out of this is a prequel, first movie had a great mystique about it, leave that shit alone.
But otherwise, more time in Wick's world = happy.

To me, a prequel is better than an actual sequel. Cuz the guy is retired in the film, he only comes back cuz they fucked his world over. At the end, he get his peace. And walks away w/ the dog. I'd honestly prefer no continuation but since we don't have that... i'll take the lesser of two evils.
