Ah, found footage I see...
Well, count me right the fuck out. I seriously don't want to watch another film where the actors handle a camera for a VERYYYYYYYY long time.

I am so, so, so, so, so sick of found footage movies. And now in the digital where everyone insists on archiving every minute detail of their lives, they're even more annoying.
There's a certain audacity to that premise and its insistence on making nature evil. The concept of making swaying grass and ominous trees look evil is kind of a cool Val Lewton-ish idea. It's a shame that the film is so terrible. I do not care about Mark Whalberg's cough syrup.

I've had multiple people mention they think the TV spots really creep them out.
I just don't get it.

The TV spots make this look hilarious. I'm pretty sure that's not what they're going for, though.

I actually agree that the promos for this don't make it look bad. Shyamalan has been hit and miss for a long time but I've wanted him to come back and make a strong film like his early ones. I might see this depending what the reviews are like.

When was there a hit in the last decade?

I didn't specify when exactly just that its been a long time. He had a strong run for a while though with The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, and The Village if you ask me. The last two thrillers he did weren't the greatest (although The Happening is kind of dumb fun) and The Last Airbender and After Earth seemed like odd choices for him.

I read a review that stated this has a good amount of comedy in it, and is mostly Shyamalan attempting making fun of his own self seriousness while still being a bit of a horror movie.

Man, this looks terrible. I never saw The Happening or After Earth, but my most accounts they are both terrible. I only watched The Last Airbender (on video) because I am a big fan of the animated series, but the movie was awful. No way would I watch this flick, unless it got rave reviews across the board.

huh...i had no idea M. Knight did After Earth. maybe that is why i didn't see it. either that or it looked like regurgitated ass chunks.

Up to 4 reviews now, all positive, all comment on how humorous the movie is.
All that means is it's likely to get a better score than After Earth (11%) and Last Airbender (6%).

The Happening was hilarious in a B-movie sort of way.
Is this all found footage? From the looks of certain shots it doesn't appear that way. I'm not sick of found footage movies, but it'd rather it be mixed up and just be footage.

After delivering back-to-back creative and commercial duds in the sci-fi action genre, M. Night Shyamalan retreats to familiar thriller territory with “The Visit.” As far as happy homecomings go, it beats the one awaiting his characters, though not by much. The story of two teens spending a week with the creepy grandparents they’ve never met unfolds in a mockumentary style that’s new for the filmmaker and old hat for horror auds. Heavier on comic relief (most of it intentional) than genuine scares, this low-budget oddity could score decent opening weekend B.O. and ultimately find a cult following thanks to its freakier twists and turns, but hardly represents a return to form for its one-time Oscar-nominated auteur.

I've enjoyed enough of his films (especially Signs and Unbreakable) that I'll give him another chance. The trailer was very good, but then again, almost every trailer sells me.

It's getting pretty decent reviews. Village Voice even called it the "best studio horror flick in recent years," for what that's worth. I'll probably check it out.

The one who really phoned it in was M Night Shyamalan. Literally. I kept waiting for his cameo, but according to the credits, his character was a guy who just sent texts.
It's so worth watching The Happening, even though it's silly and poorly acted.
