I think it can top 100M opening weekend. WB's banking on one thing and one thing only for their DCEU--name recognition. They can do anything they like with their characters because they're operating on the premise that you KNOW them already.
Doesn't matter if this is the first female-led big budget superhero/comic book film, it's Wonder Woman. There's a reason she's part of what's callled the Trinity with Bats and Supes. The general public is going to be interested enough in it to go see it regardless of quality. You can also factor in some of the F&F franchise fans who've missed her the last 2 movies to come see this.

Batman vs Superman made $166m, Suicide Squad made $133m.
Suicide Squad had noticeably better legs -- it ended at $325m domestic (2.44x multiplier), BvS ended at $330m (< 2x multiplier)
BvS opened bigger than The Dark Knight ($158m Opening, $534m D. Gross, 3.39x multiplier), and The Dark Knight Rises ($161m opening, $448m D. Gross, 2.78x multiplier)

I don't think the WB is banking on stupid so much as they simply don't have anyone that understands the material to run the franchise.

Diane Lane says WW won't be as good as Under the Tuscan Sun.

So the bar has been set. No Wonder Woman on a journey of self reflection and remodeling. Disappointed. Of course it'll be even more disappointing if Wonder Woman doesn't have as much action as Under the Tuscan Sun.

- Batman v Superman: You had the DC Trilogy; Ben Affleck, who has his own following; Henry Cavill, who does have fans as well.
- Suicide Squad: You have Harley Quinn, which has this fanatical following in the comic book industry; Jared Leto, who brings his band fans and acting fanatics; large cast of B-level actors that are very easily recognized.
Now you have Wonder Woman, with Gal Gadot still proving she can continue to deliver like she did in BvS and Chris Pine (Star Trek franchise following). Not all three are equal, unless you attempt to force them to be equal.

I wonder if it is really fair to compare Wonder Woman to the two previous movies.

Well for a while the only reason DC was even publishing Wonder Woman comics was because of some arcane wording in the contract that they would lose the rights to publish her if they lapsed. That's since been rectified but she definitely isn't the draw Superman or especially Batman is, however she still is perhaps the most iconic super heroine still, and headlines the DC superhero girls line. My daughter, for one, is excited to see this.

The Transformer series must be some of the greatest movies of ALL time then and the new Star Wars movies you know because the second Trilogy made more than the first one.

I read the Whedon script. It wasn't awful but needed some work.
I think WW is going to be much larger than expected. It was definitely the most popular trailer when I went to see GOTG and looks terrific. I think comic book sales have almost no relation to BO sales, and WW appeals to a pretty broad demographic.
If initial review leaks hold up I think it is going to be a huge hit.

I just am looking forward to all the bitching people will be doing if this doesn't do well. "Men can't stand to see a woman lead superhero film" Misogyny.

Maybe, just maybe, we've never had a successful female led superhero movie because no one has tried making a good one yet?
If this movie is bad, and doesn't do well, people will fall back on those tired arguments.

To be fair I think Supergirl was more a product of the era and unfortunately came during the bad Reeve films. I don't know that it was intentionally crappy as it was probably following the lead of those films. It's definitely not a good movie though.

It isn't, at all, but that doesn't stop people from using crap like Supergirl, Elektra, and Catwoman as arguments that people don't want to see female superhero movies.

I don't know what the hell WB was thinking when they made Catwoman. That was some straight up all around shit.

Honestly, a black super villain lead? That was also terrible and not at all close to the comics or related to the otherwise successful DC franchise? That was breaking almost too much ground there.
I do think the character is important. I don't think I'd care much about a Black Widow movie, much like I wouldn't care as much about a Hawkeye movie (though both have excellent recent comic runs that would probably make decent films, and have leads who have already proven to be decent action headliners). Wonder Woman is on a different level, so I'm hoping they nail it.
