Cabin Fever remake (2016, D: Zariwny) - with the original 2002 script for some reason

Eli Roth’s 2002 horror comedy Cabin Fever is getting a remake, with the original movie’s writer-director Roth returning as executive producer. He won’t have to do much writing this time, though: The plan is to use the exact same Roth-Randy Pearlstein script that was shot in 2002, and with a cast already moved in, it puts the project on the fast track. Shooting begins this week in Portland, OR.

The new version will star Teen Wolf‘s Gage Golightly, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario and Nadine Crocker. Travis Zariwny (Intruder) is directing. Armory Films’ Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros and Contend’s Evan Astrowsky will produce, and Armory and Pelican Point Media are financing. Roth will exec produce with Cassian Elwes, Ike and Jaclyn Ann Suri, and Peter Fruchtman.

Elwes and CAA will handle domestic sales for Cabin Fever and Voltage international sales at the upcoming American Film Market. Susan Jackson, who helped finance the original film and and sold it to Lionsgate in a bidding war at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival, will get a “dedicated to” title. She died last week.

The original Cabin Fever centered on a group of college students who rent a cabin in the woods to do some partying. That’s when they begin to fall victim to a flesh-eating virus and all hell breaks loose.

“Travis had an amazing vision for my original script, and as a scary movie fan I really wanted to see it. I almost see this like re-staging a play, and I’m excited to see what ideas Travis and the cast bring to it. They’re all fans of the original and want to make a film that’s a new classic and I believe they will,” said Roth.

The pic takes the reins from a pair of ill-received sequels to Cabin Fever, which grossed $30.6M worldwide: 2009’s Cabin Fever: Spring Fever, directed by Ti West, and the digital-only Cabin Fever: Patient Zero which came out this February. Neither involved Roth.

Yeah, I have little interest in this, but the whole "Using the exact same script" thing caught me off guard.

Is there really any point in doing a remake if the script is, word for word, identical to the original film?

The original never excited me.

It's watchable indie filmmaking, which I can admire. There were some very interesting production hurdles regarding the budgeting and union labor.

I rented Cabin Fever when it was a new release and thought it was pretty fun. Picked up the DVD from the $5 bin at Wal-Mart a couple years later and it's still sitting in my unwatched pile. Never imagined a remake would go into production before I got around to watching it a second time.

I'm generally not a fan of Eli Roth but I didn't mind Cabin Fever. Weird that it's being remade already though.

Pretty much this. I can't say I like much from Roth but Cabin Fever was fairly enjoyable. Not good enough for some weird filmmaking homage to himself though.

The remake cycle is getting shorter and shorter in Hollywood. The horror market is so starved for familiar franchises, since they have a small hope to stand out in a very crowded marketplace.

I liked the original Cabin Fever a great deal. I'm not sure it was the script that made it, as much as the campy setting and unique direction.

Because what else is Roth going to do? He hasn't been relevant for his directorial works since Hostel II. The best part of that flick was the multi-language narrator for the the trailer.

EDIT - So Roth isn't directing. Ok. I'm still not interested.

But the trailer for his last film refers to him as "horror master Eli Roth", so he must be relevant.

I always enjoyed this movie, and never got it on dvd, might get the bluray. As far as a remake goes, it will probably be the exact same movie with more gore.

One thing I always liked about the original was seeing Rider Strong from Boy Meets World in a totally different kind of role. I always sort of wondered why he hasn't done more acting as I always thought he was decent and pretty much the main part of that series that I liked.

"Let's face it, I'm a hack. The only decent film I ever made was Cabin Fever and I haven't had an original idea since. So I thought, hmmm... let's remake Cabin Fever using the exact same script! I mean, the original is 12 years old! 12! That's an eternity! I hope that fans of the original will be stupid enough to go see this so I can make a few bucks," said Roth.

Fixed.

What's next? A shot-for-shot remake of Psycho?

Trying to reboot a franchise that was never that big to begin with, and using the exact same script? This constant rebooting of franchises annoys me more than any other movie trend. I actually miss the days when producers simply ran their properties into the ground with increasingly silly sequels.

Initially this seems dumb but his point about restaging a play is interesting. I do a lot of theater work in my spare time and it is the same script, word for word, every time someone else does a production. But how you stage it can be completely different - it might be interesting if they do something wildly different with it.
