Always thought she was beautiful in "I Married Dora". But I never knew what happened to her since them. I didn't even know that was her in Modern Family.

Shame. So young. She was quite sultry in the '80s.

Weird that the article doesn't mention how she died. But maybe it's cuz I'm rushing to do something else that I missed it.

Crushed on her big time in the 80's. Jacob's Ladder; that face, those lips, that voice...Damn...Adiós, Mi Amor.

Other articles are saying "natural causes after a brief illness".

Back in 1998 when she worked on Rush Hour, she was still relatively thin and in shape. Her weight gain became very noticeable in the 2000s. I wonder if she may have had a thyroid condition.

I hate vague obituaries that says someone died from natural causes. No one should die from natural causes at age 55.

She went to my high school, H.S. of Performing Arts ( the "Fame" school), but a few years after me. Her classmates included Ving Rhames and Esai Morales, per IMDB.

She registered most strongly with me in BLUE STEEL with Jamie Lee Curtis and LONE STAR with Chris Cooper.

The BBC obit says she died of "natural causes after a brief illness." Can you get more vague? I agree with Djariya: at her age that ain't "natural."

Apparently she was having kidney problems...might have been kidney failure that did her in. And I agree - very hot, gorgeous woman. Loved her. Got quite a few of her movies in my collection.

They just released the cause of death as "complications due to alcohol abuse".
Wow, that makes it even sadder. Who knew?

'La Bamba' Star Elizabeth Pena Died From Alcohol Abuse
10/22/2014 2:52 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Elizabeth Pena -- who became famous playing Ritchie Valens' brother's baby mama in "La Bamba" -- died from complications from alcohol abuse.

According to the death certificate -- obtained by TMZ -- Pena suffered from cirrhosis of the liver "due to alcohol." She had the disease for months, but it became acute shortly before her death.

The death certificate says the 55-year-old had acute gastrointestinal bleeding hours before her death, which caused her heart to stop.

Pena died October 14th at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A.

Would the alcohol abuse have contributed to her weight gain? She must have been a functioning alcoholic.

Sad that she drank herself to death.

For us 80's kids, almost the whole main cast of *batteries not included are no longer with us:
Hume Cronyn
Jessica Tandy
Elizabeth
Michael Carmine (Carlos the bully)

Sad.

Re: RIP Elizabeth Pena 1961-2014 (Jacob's Ladder; Lone Star)

Sounds like it was a painful and miserable death towards the end there with the internal bleeding and all. I just had an old friend die from emobolized blood clots - brought on by years of heavy drinking.

I told this story on this site somewhere I think a few years ago...It must have been the late 80s or early 90s, and one day I was driving home (I grew up in the Hollywood Hills), and it was about 1 or 2 in the morning. Driving up the hill, I see this woman stumbling, drunk off her ass, drops her purse, keeps 'walking,' and I stop when I get to her and tell her she dropped her purse. She blurts out something about picking it up, and starts stumbling away. I ask if she needs help, and she blurts out more nonsensical crap. I just drove home. It was Elizabeth Pena. RIP.
