Re: Pixar's Inside Out (6/19/2015)
I saw this last night and had a rather "MEH" reaction to it. It's a good movie, but it's not a great one, and I didn't love it the way I've loved prior PIXAR efforts like the three TOY STORY movies, FINDING NEMO, or THE INCREDIBLES.
The animation is great, of course, but I don't think the story is as engaging, emotional or moving as most of the critics out there are leading the public to believe. Not that it's a sign of quality, but most of the younger kids at my screening seemed totally uninterested in the film...talking, going up and down the aisles, etc. - usually a bad sign for a "kid's movie." While I'm sure it will be fine this weekend, it will be interesting to see if INSIDE OUT has any legs at the box office, because I don't think children are going to be begging mom and dad to see it again.

The focus on Joy is to the film's detriment, although I understand why it is very much "her" story in many ways. The film drags a bit in the middle during the return to Headquarters, which is the point our 4.5-year-old completely lost interest in it. It's colorful, to be sure, but it isn't especially stimulating for younger children otherwise (not much slapstick humor, no musical numbers).
I went into this film "blind", and I was the only one in the theater who laughed at this.

Hmm sounds interesting. Considering how indifferent I am to most Pixar work (at least, outside of The Incredibles and Ratatouille... Monsters University is the only one I couldn't make it through), I wonder if this is a reverse for that or if I'll just be hitting slightly-below indifferent.

Hrmmmmm. Now I'm really iffy on it cuz of you guys. I didn't care for the premise but the reviews got my attention. Now...I'm back to iffy.
Spy or Inside Out? It's my roommate's day to pay for the movie so I'm game for whatever.

Taking my kids on Sunday morning. I wasn't initially sure about the concept or about how it would connect with my girls (ages 5 and 6), but they wanted to see it, so we'll see how it goes.

I thought it was great. Very clever and funny. I think it's in the running for a Best Picture Oscar nod. I was really impressed with what it was trying to do both on an adult level and on one that would be appealing and understandable to kids.

Just got back and it was outstanding. Easily my favorite since "The Incredibles". The concept is so well-done and they don't miss a trick. There's hilarious stuff throughout and I was fighting back tears at the end. It's a great story about growing up and dealing with memories and change. My whole family loved it too, from my 9-year old daughter to my 79-year old father.
It's the best they've done in years. Just a fantastic movie.

I am really surprised that others are giving the movie great review, but for the most part DVDTalk users are just OK about it.
Really looking forward to the movie, it looks VERY original and creative.
Taking my daughter to the movie.
I sure hope "The Good Dino" movie is great, but not sure about that one.

Enjoyed it a great deal - just myself - and I can see where some younger kids might not be quite as on-board with the more complex themes - but there are a lot of visual/character jokes for the younger folks - without resorting the bodily functions, etc.
Highly recommended - and yes...emotional as well.

I went with my wife and 16 year old daughter and we all LOVED it. Easily my favorite Pixar film since Wall-E.
Lots of great little jokes for the adults, as usual. There's a reference to a 1970s film noir classic (just one line) that made me LMAO for a good 30 seconds that went right over the head of every other person in the theater, apparently.

Really enjoyed it also. The kids in the theater were very well-behaved and gave it a big round of applause. Big thumbs up from me.
For those wondering, there is only the extra scene during the beginning of the credits. Nothing at the end.

Imagine my confusion when I sat down for this thinking it was the newest Gaspar Noe film.

I thought I was fantastic. There is a tear-inducing scene as others have noted, but not the full-on, feature-length tear-fest that very early reviews made it sound like.
But it was much like UP in that what we saw in trailers barely scraped the surface of what this film is, which is so refreshing.
What I found most interesting was how the film was able to simplify something as complex as emotions, and it all just made so much sense. It built a great foundation to tell the story, and they stuck with it.
Finally, I was very nervous about the voice talent (seemed like a lot of "hot" talent; one of the things I hate most about most animated films lately), but I should have trusted Pixar to get it right. And while I love Lewis Black, I was afraid he'd be overdone in this one. But I think he, of them all, was utilized the best. --I absolutely loved Anger.
And I should also note that the opening short, Lava, was wonderful as well.

Here's the line made by one detective to another after the cloud person they were talking to disappeared:
I was the only person in the theater who chuckled at that line.

Saw it today and loved it. The concept and execution of such a complex idea was beautifully done.
I watch very few family movies in theatres because the risk of a rowdy audience is too high and it sure happened today as some very annoying children who were at the theatre for a birthday party happened to sit right behind me. Imagine a dozen or so sugar-high children and cringe.

I didn't love it as much as I hoped. I think I ended up loving the idea of what they were trying to do much better then the actual execution of it, and overall I thought the movie was bookended by some great things in the beginning and very end but the actual journey in the middle of the movie lost a lot of steam. I'm not too sure how to explain it, but while the end result and explanation of how all the emotions affected Riley, how they got there wasn't as interesting. For instance -
Oh, I also LOVED the Lava short probably more then Inside Out. After going to Hawaii a few times, something about that culture I just adore.

I absolutely loved it! As did my niece and nephew. (Ages 11 and 8.) Very funny, but also sad. It joins the select group of movies that have made me tear up. Nothing's going to dethrone Big Fish, though.
I've never cared for Lewis Black. The "mad as Hell" schtick he uses in his comedy does nothing for me, but I thought he was utilized perfectly here. Along those lines, as a hardcore Parks and Rec fan, I thought Amy Poehler was a great choice as Joy. Here she's like an animated version of Leslie Knope's relentless optimism. The casting of Phyllis Smith as Sadness was inspired. And Richard Kind's Bing Bong really got to me, in a good way.
Even though I don't buy that many Blu Rays anymore, I could see myself picking this one up when it comes out.
Lava was also great.

One of the better Pixar flicks imo. Think it resonates better with borderline joyless adults, which seems to make up a majority of critics
