Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017) (D: Rupert Sanders; S: Johansson)

Michael Pitt Lands Villain Role Opposite Scarlett Johansson in 'Ghost in the Shell' (Exclusive)

Michael Pitt, perhaps best known for playing a gangster on Boardwalk Empire, has nabbed the villain role in Ghost in the Shell, the adaptation of the manga series by DreamWorks.

Rupert Sanders is directing the long-in-the-works sci-fi movie, which is eyeing a late February start in New Zealand.

Scarlett Johansson is a special-ops cyborg in a task force named Section 9 that deals in the most dangerous criminals and extremists.

Pitt will play a character known as the Laughing Man in the manga. The antagonist is a bitter and vengeful man with a body that is part robot. He has a unique sense of style and has been described as a bad guy filtered through the lens of a street artist.

Pilou Asbęk is also in the cast.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017) (D: Rupert Sanders; S: Johansson)

Finally, some positive casting news.

http://en.rocketnews24.com/2016/03/0...-beat-takeshi/

On the other hand, others are upset that the Japanese Kusanagi will be being portrayed by the Caucasian Johansson. A common rebuttal to that complaint has been that in the cybernetics-steeped world of Ghost in the Shell, most characters’ bodies are largely artificial, so it’s feasible that Kusanagi could simply opt to put her ghost in a non-Japanese-looking shell with no greater significance attached to the action than wearing a foreign-made piece of clothing.

Still, those hoping for some sort of Japanese presence on-screen were no doubt disappointed when Danish actor Pilou Asbaek was tapped as the ethnically ambiguous Batou, followed by Caucasian American Michael Pitt as the terrorist antagonist Laughing Man. Now, though, the live-action Ghost in the Shell has its first Japanese cast member, and it’s none other than the internationally acclaimed Beat Takeshi.

It’s not like the 69-year-old Takeshi will be making a cameo as a street food vendor or some other such minor background character. He’ll be playing Daisuke Aramaki, the head of Public Security Section 9 and the highest-ranking member of Ghost in the Shell’s team of heroes.

The role marks Takeshi’s first role in a Hollywood movie since another cyberpunk film, Johnny Mnemonic. Given how much more well-known he’s become overseas in the last two decades, it’s likely Takeshi will receive much more screen time than he did in the 1995 Keanu Reeves film.

He's a huge multi-hyphenate talent-star in Japan. Over there, he's a huge comedian and TV personality, hosting game and talk shows. He does all kinds of other stuff: acting, screenwriting, producing, editing, directing, writing, singing, running a talent studio and production company, even worked on a video game. He sounds like a renaissance man. I'd kill to have that kind of eclectic talent pool. It's sounds like a tremendously fulfilling life.

Not sure what is there to wow about. It's Johannsen w/ a Motoko based hair style.

I'm not all weird about the adaptation of this like others are. I just hope it's good.

The internet in general has become a place for people to become negative, hostile, and miserable together. Everything is a gross exaggeration and things are either the best ever or totally awful. I watched The Force Awakens the other day and really had a great time. I went to IMDB was and was shocked(not really) to see that every post was about how terrible it was.

Motoko? You don't know what that references? I could have used another name but... I chose not to.

My statement is sound. It's an image of SJ looking at something w/ that hair style. Looks fine. Nothing really wow in there. Unless you mean that anything SJ is wow... then.. sure.

it's just.. a very simple, though nice, image of the lead.

Motoko.. Kusanagi.

Huh? Did you read my post? (See below and please read it this time) I'm familiar with Motoko and her hairstyle. where did you get that I wasn't?

Uh...NOPE. Because no one asked for your analysis of "wow".

Dude, i don't really care if YOU THINK it's just a simple image. Again, who asked for your critique of my post or perception of the image? It's the first time I saw it, and I had a positive reaction to it. So I said "wow". Nothing complicated, nothing to read into it.

(Sigh...I can't believe I'm having to fuckin' explain a goddamn simple "wow")

I suspect this film will be about as good as the Aeon Flux live action film.

Which was at least still leagues better than Ultraviolet and Catwoman.

I'm not a huge fan of the original Ghost in the Shell. Enjoy the concept, visuals, and soundtrack but found the movie itself pretty boring, I'm curious on how exactly they plan to adapt it.
