why didn't George Lucas bother to fix the black slug on the side of Palpatine's face?
this has always annoyed me. with all of the fucking around that Lucas did with the OT, adding in unnecessary CGI, new scenes, AND cleaning up some F/X shots, why the FUCK didn't they fix the annoying cartoon "black slug" on the side of the Emperor's face at the end of ROTJ? WHY???

Google "Emperor slugs." I was never really able to see them growing up but there are little black blobs animated on the sides of his face to hide some sort of makeup flaw on the edge of McDiarmid's face and they are noticeable on some displays. Lucas raped everyone's childhood to digitally fix the problem on the Blu-rays.

He couldn't be bothered to fix the color of Luke's lightsaber on the Falcon because Ewoks needed to blink.

I googled it and found this:
I can vaguely see it in the OP screenshot now. I never noticed it in the millions of times I have seen the movie, and I never would have noticed it without someone pointing it out. It's not a big deal in my opinion. I just think of it as a darker part of the cowl's shadow.

That's the big complaint? I've never noticed it before and don't think that would have even bothered me if I did.

Greedo shooting first
Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw as Anakin's Force Ghost
Jar Jar being added to the ending celebration scene of ROTJ
Ewoks blinking
Ewoks in general
Of all the complaints about Star Wars, Emperor face slug wouldn't even register in my top 100.

It's more noticeable in motion, and it's one of those things that will drive you crazy once you see it.
But I agree, fixing it digitally is a huge slap in the face to the guy who spent an afternoon scribbling on the print with a Sharpie in 1983.

I'm astonished so many people say they've never seen it before, it's stuck out for me since I was a little kid. I would love to know the story behind it, and why instead of using a solid mask, they drew over it frame by frame, creating an animated effect of a dark line wiggling around like the "squiggle-vision" on Dr. Katz.

Never noticed for years.

I thought it was explained that they were parasitic slugs that fed on the dark side energy and lived on the Emperor's face.
I never noticed it before, but yeah, you'd think that stuff like this would be cleaned up versus adding dialogue.

It's bothered me since I was a kid, too. The most obvious explanation to me would be that there was something about Palpatine's makeup that Lucas didn't like, like there was something sticking out to the side of his eye that caught the light in a weird way, so Lucas has it "painted" over.

I always enjoyed Lucas' I will fix one flaw but you have to take 6 pointless changes to get it with each release on home video.
I will remove the matte lines around the Rancor but you have to take Jedi Rocks as punishment.

The answer is simple ... The Emporer would not allow Lucas to face-rape him.

For the most part they can't be seen if you have your television or monitor set up correctly. If your screen settings are too bright then they are very obvious. But I think part of the reason Lucas wasn't in a rush to fix them is because it's a problem on the user end; set up your tv correctly and you won't see them.
