The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

Did a search, no thread on this. Decided it was worth making one after seeing the great reviews (93% on RT, 58 reviews). Came out this week but limited release

Director: Adam Wingard
Writer: Simon Barrett
Starring: Dan Stevens

Plot: A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence.

Re: The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

I watched this today and dug it. It was more of a horror movie than an action thriller as the trailer sells it.

I'm not familiar with the lead but he was great, especially with the facial expressions. He could switch between a psychotic death stare and a smiling, innocent face with ease.

It did get quite over the top, especially the end
Spoiler:
walks out of a building surrounded by police and firemen, disguised as a firefighter, after having been shot a couple times and stabbed in the back of the back and chest
but overall it was entertaining and at times funny (in a dark way of course).

Good action too, the gunplay was particularly well filmed.

I look forward to more films from Wingard. Recommended.

Re: The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

The actor is British and mostly known for Downton Abbey of all things. Wingard is obviously a kid that grew up on 80s movies, his movies so far have been very much 80s movies done with modern day technology.

He should have been hired to direct one of the Expendable sequels.

It's also worth noting, this is at 93% with 70 reviews now.

Surprisingly little activity considering the genre, critical reception and some of the talent involved.

I enjoyed You're Next and the V/H/S movies, I'll certainly check this out.

Re: The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

This movie was fucking bonkers

A low budget slasher thriller action flick 80s throwback with more than a little dark humor. It's everything that made 80s movies great, in 90 minutes. On one hand, the directing could have been better, on the other hand, it creates such an uneasy bizarre atmosphere from beginning to end that it just works. Kind of like Drive as a horror movie?

If you liked You're Next at all, I think you'd love this.

I loved The Guest. Was such a pleasant surprise. Some great action and a memorable soundtrack. Thought the movie really benefited from having a lot of less famous actors. Posted a full review on my YouTube channel.

This still out in limited released? Doesn't seem to be on any VOD service. I want to see this one.

Re: The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

Just watched this one and, to echo the final line, what the fuck?

This was such a weird fucking movie. It definitely got over the top and cliche at times, but damnit if I wasn't hooked in right up to the end. I love how the story only revealed little bits along the way, never getting heavy on exposition. In fact, some people may be bothered it doesn't explain more.

But I thought it had solid casting, loved the Halloween setting, lots of Carpenter nods and the soundtrack is KILLER. Tonally, so bizarre but this is exactly the kind of cinema I love - weird and mostly unconventional. Definitely picking up the BD.

I agree. It's compulsively watchable, I couldn't stop if I wanted to. I forgot the Halloween aspect, it will be played a lot around then. The tone had me uneasy, it was a brilliant directorial move even if individual scenes could have been a little better

It's always entertaining to see Ethan Embry show up in these kinds of movies (along with Cheap Thrills earlier this year). Apparently all you need to do is grow a beard, and boom, you're a bad ass.

Blind bought this since it showed up on Vudu. I really liked it. Very much a throwback to the 80s type of action thriller. Some cool actors pop up and make things fun. Stevens was good, hope to see more of him.

I've been doing ok with blind buys this year: this one, Cold in July, and The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake are all worth it.

I watched this over the weekend on a whim, I had never heard of it before.

I thought it was classic. The perfect blend of mystery thriller, stoner comedy, and cult horror film. The second half really took me by surprise too, based on what the trailers made the movie seem like. islandclaws is on the money with the story.

I saw this today. I really enjoyed it. It's far from being original, but it's framed so well that you can't help but have fun with it.

Best use of Steve B.'s 'Because I Love You' that have ever seen in a film

Re: The Guest -- D: Wingard S: Stevens -- 2014

Rented the DVD from Red Box on Sunday and watched it yesterday.

This movie was a pleasant surprise. Never heard of it until I saw an online ad and poster for it. Thought it was some random DTV release and then I saw it was from the makers of You're Next.

Dan Stevens was really good and creepy as "David" had a really low key, but sinister vibe. The character was ape shit crazy, especially what he did in the diner.

I also liked Maika Monroe as the young female lead. She looked really sexy in the tight tops, garter belts and trashy waitress outfits.

Definitely a good rental.

And the ending....

Spoiler:
With David walking out dressed as the fireman and Anna going..."What the fuck?" was awesome.

Could there be a The Guest 2?

I've now talked to a lot of people that don't like this movie, I get that it goes off the rail and gets kind of ridiculous, but that's exactly what I love about.

He had to beat off a lot of American men to get the part.

I got to admit I liked this one a lot as well...Dan Stevens is definitely a wooden actor though.

Re-watched this film last night. Still love it.

I feel kind of stupid that until now I didn't notice that
Spoiler:
David is wearing a hoodie with the logo of the 'corporation' early on in the film. I didn't notice it until I saw the logo on the elevator of their parking garage.
