I don't know. The first twenty or so minutes with Cranston's character is great. It slowly goes downhill after that in my opinion. Not a bad movie but not a particularly good one either.

Cranston chewed the scenery, an extremely overrated performance. It was totally inappropriate for what was otherwise a somber film. The movie definitely improved when he was gone, but it's amusing to me that the internet hates that movie because it had the balls to kill off Walter White.

Re: Kong: Skull Island (2017, Vogt-Roberts) S: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson

It's nothing to do with his character being killed, I simply thought the prologue was better than the actual film. It set up what seemed like a promising film but overall it was just alright. None of the other characters were that great (I actually enjoy both of the main stars but the characters were overall bland). Plus the main stuff with Godzilla was all at the end basically which was annoying. Yeah we saw him before but it cut away a lot and didn't show hardly any of the monster aspect until the end.

It wasn't as good as the original Godzilla(1954), but it's definitely one of the best giant monster movies ever made.

From King Kong(1933) to Pacific Rim, can anybody point out a giant monster movie with well developed, three dimensional characters?

Honestly I liked the 2005 remake of King Kong quite a bit. It's been a while since I've seen it but I seem to remember liking the characters in that. I didn't really like Pacific Rim either.

Nope, but Cloverfield remains my favorite of its kind.

Are we not counting "Jaws"?

How about "Jurassic Park"?

It's a tough balance to juggle serving the audience with monster action while also taking the time to develop rich characters. You'll mostly get archetypes and, really, I can be fine with that as long as the film is good.

My problems with Godzilla:

- friggin' dreary, gloomy color palette for the film. Just shoot the thing in black and white, if you're going to do that.

- also, they gave Godzilla Homer Simpson feet:

Kong 33's characters may not of had an arc, but they were all very interesting...

Jackson's King Kong tried to do that and IMO did it better than most giant monster movie fare. It was also it's biggest fault. I also recommend the more recent Shin-Gojira. More character based than a typical kaiju movie from Japan.

I've heard good things about Japan's latest Godzilla movie, and I think it just won a big award over there. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Not only best film but also best screenplay, best director, best cinematography, and a few others. It swept up many of the night's biggest awards at Japan's equivalent to the Oscars.

I was mostly interested in Shin Godzilla since it was a Godzilla film directed by Hideaki Anno (of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame). I know it was a co-direction with Shinji Higuchi, but yeah, was more interested in Anno.

I guess with this new Godzilla/Kong shared universe they're going with the new Planet of the Apes anthology-like approach where the human cast is different each time. I like the new Apes films but that's one aspect that I'm kind of disappointed with. For Kong I'm basing that just on the 70s setting.

Sure, why not? While there is no excuse to make the human element terrible, nobody who watches these films is coming for the drama. I'm perfectly fine with a revolving cast for the entire series because they'll never be my reason for watching these movies.

I liked Jackson's King Kong I don't really know that a origin film for King Kong is necessary but I might see it.
Me too.
